With 4 dogs and 2 horses we get piles of pet hair. When I vacuum the house I empty the canister across the road in the ditch scattering it in the tall grass for the birds nesting material.

We've had Baltimore Orioles before but usually far out and away from us or the house. I'd seen them busy snatching up hair but they'd fly off to fool me.... Their main diet of fruit and insects makes them important around the farm.

This morning I Caught her! Right in our front yard in the Hackberry tree above our driveway. The familiar hanging basket nest made of woven fibers is most distinctive of the species !

Baltimore Orioles seek out ripe fruit. Cut oranges in half and hang them from trees to invite orioles into your yard. Special oriole feeders filled with sugar water supplement the flower nectar that Baltimore Orioles gather. You can even put out small amounts of jelly to attract these nectar-eaters. Planting bright fruits and nectar-bearing flowers, such as raspberries, crab apples, and trumpet vines, can attract Baltimore Orioles year after year. I just planted Trumpet vines last year for them and we have tons of wild plum, raspberries, and buffalo berry trees. IF you make the feeder make sure you use a slick steel post to keep out the squirrels.

"B" is for Box... I had an old rough Cedar box that is pretty weathered out.

I'd used it for flowers on my Grandparents graves.

I sealed up the cracks with some latex calking

Added a few more screws to draw it in tighter.

Tossed in some potting soil after setting a few days. For the second "B" of my photobomb I planted Basil in the box so I have freshly snipped herbs for cooking and munching.

You might recall from yesterday's posting I'd purchased more flower pots, cleaned up, and painted some cast iron discarded pipe hubs. Today I set about making the display more durable. I set the large hub on some roofing shingles to keep it from sinking into the ground so easily as it had done. I also placed some bricks inside to get a firm level surface.

I placed the smaller, tall hub in the middle resting on the bricks. I used sand to fill the voids, settled by a splash of water, then potting soil.

Taking the large, glossy grey pot I placed a piece of aluminum foil in the bottom to aid in drainage.

IF you'd fill that large pot totally with potting soil you need a "Crane" to lift it. With Styrofoam you may drastically cut down on the weight in large pots if the plants are to have a shallow root system.

Cut your bottom piece to fit directly on the tinfoil

Your subsequent pieces may be more randomly placed with the cuttings placed in securely too. Place a heavy rock, brick, block or substantial weight on your Styrofoam so it will remain in place while you "Settle" the sand into place with water. Then add your potting soil. You've just saved yourself from needing back surgery to repair a slipped disk!

When a good friend heard of my car accident he came by with some flower seed packets instead of a get well card. Friend's like that are a special treasure. The top large pot got the "Flower Garden Mix"

The lower tier I planted the "Marigolds" If by chance too many Marigolds come up I will transplant some into another area I have available.

The car dealership called about 10* this morning that the car was ready and if I wanted to come down to sign the papers. It had gone through final prep and cleaning. I called a friend then changed clothes. We left about noonish. I test drove the car around the lot then out on a back street to get the feel for it vs the Beemer.... I have not driven in over a month... TUFF MY Mercedes.... to the Benzpad. In the interval between their call and our arrival it was discovered the air conditioning was not up to their specifications. They would keep the car, repair it and bring it to me. Less a reduction in the price for my trouble of the trip.

On the way home we stopped off for Chinese Buffet and some rummaging in a few junque shoppes. I Found some HUGE flower pots reasonably priced... Ok... cheap! This coppery colored pot is about a gallon and a half.

The biggest easily thr*ee gallons. The shiny grey patina will be outstanding on the cast iron base I have selected for it.

In the fading twilight I managed to get the second coat of paint on the cast iron bases. The bases are the cut off ends of sewer line run in town I managed to salvage to repurpose.

I also seen "pest" eliminators that emit a high pitched sound that runs off mice and bugs. I placed a dozen of them strategically through the house.

Bonnie Blue

The Bonnie Blue Flag, a rectangular blue field with a single five-pointed star in the center, is the familiar name of a flag that dates from 16 Sept. 1810, when it was used by the short-lived Republic of West Florida.

The Bonnie Blue flag was used as an unofficial flag during the early months of 1861. It was flying above the Confederate batteries that first opened fire on Fort Sumter, beginning the Civil War. The flag was flown in Mississippi after the state seceded from the Union, inspiring the Confederacy-era song "The Bonnie Blue Flag." In addition, many military units had their own regimental flags they would carry into battle.

This flag has come to symbolize secession, self-governance and State Sovereignty.

We've flown the Bonnie Blue over the farm for the last 14 months. It doesn't carry the "racially charged" connotation like in the "Stars & Bars" Confederate Battle flag. The mailman just brought us *3* more today.

You might remember awhile back I removed the label from a plastic Gain Packets container. A member suggested I plant a fern in it... THUS today I sauntered out with my walker to fulfill her suggestion. First of all I took a piece of aluminum foil to assist with the drainage

With my trusty cordless drill I punctured several drainage holes in the bottom.

The foil fit perfectly conforming to the irregular bottom providing a space for excess water to exit the container. I filled the container about 2/3s full with potting soil.

Like a dumb ass, spade in hand, and an ice cream bucket I bounced my way out to the fern patch by the shed forgetting the camera on the workbench.... #@%**!!! Digging a couple plants I made my way back where they fit down in nicely. A little more potting soil along with a healthy splash of water and PRESTO ! Ferns as suggested in my pretty green container. The strong winds here blew the fronds around a bit, however, later I shall set the plants in a more prominent position.

I seen this old rough cedar box I'd made many years ago for my Grandfather's grave out in the cemetery but gave up on live plants.

I'd just tossed it out back under an outside workbench where it weathered away... cracked, and faded. So I tightened it up with a few more screws.

I filled the cracks and seams with a waterproof adhesive.

I think I've managed to salvage it for a little project after the sealant dries and cures a bit. Just give it a few days.
