There are few Scandinavians who don't know what Kringla are. These delightful bread/cookies are delicious whether plain, sugared, with jelly or honey. Made from simple ingredients found in most kitchens.

My Kringla are simple; Mix these ingredients first 1 cup sour cream, 1 cup heavy cream, 1/4 cup melted butter,1-1/2 cups sugar,1 egg, 2 teaspoons vanilla

Add in gradually 4-1/4 cups flour Mix these in with the first cup of flour...2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon salt

After the second cup of flour you may as well install your bread hooks to finish out the kneading.

Cover the dough and chill it overnight. When you're ready to bake, preheat the oven to 400°F. Divide the dough into four pieces. Divide each piece into 8 small balls.

Roll each ball on a lightly floured surface to an 8" rope, making sure it's as even as possible. Form the rope into a figure eight and seal the ends. Put eight Kringlas on one cookie sheet. Bake for 8 to 12 minutes or until the cookies are light brown. Remove immediately to a wire rack to cool.

I've seen some Kringla worked into imaginative shapes decorated with sprinkles, frosting, and syrups........ Go wild and enjoy !

Tips for the best Kringla recipe:

Measure the flour correctly. Spoon the flour lightly into the cup and level it off. Each cup of flour should weigh 125 grams if you are into that sort of thing.
Don’t handle the dough too much. Even though it’s rich, you can still overwork it, which will make the cookies tougher. This is basically a quick bread recipe and must be handled gently.

I'd been working and needed a "set down and recoup break" I went back, re-read, and responded to every get well wish and prayer that I didn't have the strength to do so coupled with the medication they'd pumped into me. A person's wealth is not measured in gold or silver but in to persons he counts as friends.
Thank You,
Bret in North Iowa.

Drought in North Iowa

Here you see the Mighty Iowa River reduced to a trickle. Normally canoes, inner-tubes, and kayaks are able to ply the waterway but our extreme lack of rain in August and September has taken it's toll on the recreational aspects of our river.

I AM LUCKY in that while on the bridge taking pictures I captured a Grey Heron just about to take flight as I snapped the picture.

These long legged birds walk the shallows catching their lunch in small fish, crayfish, and snails.

I AM LUCKY to have MUTTs Inc. I made us Chicken Alfredo over noodles with garlic bread. On the way from the stove I tipped my plate a bit too much and lost a garlic bread to the floor that Ronnie snatched up in a New York Second!

Every day whether or not we notice it we have so much to be thankful for.... Each day given us should be spent in the most positive endeavors your mind can imagine.

I'd purchased these plaster shelves before I got sick. There were some rough spots that needed attention. I mixed some plaster of Paris in with some paint then brushed out the rough spots.

They are now gilded ready to be hung up.
