Today's Main Event

You might recall from yesterday's posting I'd purchased more flower pots, cleaned up, and painted some cast iron discarded pipe hubs. Today I set about making the display more durable. I set the large hub on some roofing shingles to keep it from sinking into the ground so easily as it had done. I also placed some bricks inside to get a firm level surface.

I placed the smaller, tall hub in the middle resting on the bricks. I used sand to fill the voids, settled by a splash of water, then potting soil.

Taking the large, glossy grey pot I placed a piece of aluminum foil in the bottom to aid in drainage.

IF you'd fill that large pot totally with potting soil you need a "Crane" to lift it. With Styrofoam you may drastically cut down on the weight in large pots if the plants are to have a shallow root system.

Cut your bottom piece to fit directly on the tinfoil

Your subsequent pieces may be more randomly placed with the cuttings placed in securely too. Place a heavy rock, brick, block or substantial weight on your Styrofoam so it will remain in place while you "Settle" the sand into place with water. Then add your potting soil. You've just saved yourself from needing back surgery to repair a slipped disk!

When a good friend heard of my car accident he came by with some flower seed packets instead of a get well card. Friend's like that are a special treasure. The top large pot got the "Flower Garden Mix"

The lower tier I planted the "Marigolds" If by chance too many Marigolds come up I will transplant some into another area I have available.

Nice job on the planter, Darter, but that cast iron is too heavy for you to be lugging around.

Nice of you to invite Ronnie to enjoy that very delightful lunch. Sounds intriguingly delicious.

I don't know what we would have done without him. He's a few bricks shy of a wagonload but just has a special way about him.

I been in EEbay ... talking to JD about making our own casting --- then pouring them ourselves. We'll need 16 of them ... one for each of the raised panels on the door.

Bret, please don't try to drive that new car home by yourself. You are heavily medicated which could easily result in another accident, destroying both you and the car. Be careful. Have the dealership provide you with a driver to take the car home, and another vehicle can follow to take the driver back to town.
