Remembrance

The RMS Titanic sank in the early morning hours of 1*5 April 191*2 in the North Atlantic Ocean, four days into her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City.

The largest ocean liner in service at the time, Titanic had an estimated 2,224 people on board when she struck an iceberg at around 23:40 (ship's time) on Sunday, April 19.

Her sinking hours and forty minutes later at 02:20 (ship's time; 05:18 GMT) on Monday, 15 April, resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 people, making it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history.

Titanic received six warnings of sea ice on 14 April but was traveling about 22 knots when her lookouts sighted the iceber

From the time of the collision to the moment of her sinking, at least 35,000 long tons (36,000 t) of water flooded into Titanic

In an emergency, lifeboats at the time were intended to be used to transfer passengers off the distressed ship and onto a nearby vessel. ] It was therefore commonplace for liners to have far fewer lifeboats than needed to accommodate all their passengers and crew,

Modern cruise ships still do not have enough lifeboats to accommodate all the passengers and crew.
