Lord Give Me Patience. Right Now!

A few years ago, I made a conscious decision to try to be more patient. I was not going to live my life as if every little thing that didn’t go my way was the result of some nefarious plot, and therefore, not react as if it were. The woman hogging the express lane at the supermarket? No worries, I have a book. The man holding up the line at the gas station while he studies each Lotto ticket? I’m not in a rush. The person apparently building their financial empire through the ATM? Maybe the machine is on the fritz and it’s not their fault.

I’m just trying to give people the benefit of the doubt, you know? I don’t know their fears and frustrations. I don’t know what drives them. Maybe I’ve been in their shoes and would understand their situation exactly. Maybe their experience is so alien to me I wouldn’t be able to comprehend it at all. Either way, impatience is not the proper reaction. I just occupy myself until the line starts moving again. Maybe a book, as I’ve mentioned. Maybe I’ll play a game on my phone, or plan a meal, or try to think of an interesting blog post topic. It rarely does any good to yell and kvetch (though I might be screaming internally).

Side Note: As a multi-year veteran of a Customer Service/Tech Support department, don’t cuss at the person on the other end of the phone. They didn’t cause the problem, they will report it to the people who are supposed to fix it, and all they want is to solve your issue and get you off of the line so they can help the next person. Make it easier on them.

The only time I really fall short in my efforts is in the car. I am a total jerk while driving, and I recognize that. I really don’t want to be, but THE SPEED LIMIT IS 45 WHY ARE YOU DOING 30!!!! GET OUT OF THE LEFT LANE IF YOU’RE NOT GOING TO PASS, YOU BLANKETY-BLANK-BLANK!!!! THE LIGHT HAS CHANGED!!!! ARE YOU WAITING FOR A PARTICULAR SHADE OF GREEN? GO!!!!

So if I get behind you on the road, I apologize in advance.

Keep in mind that I’m speaking only of day-to-day life, with the errands and interactions we all go through. When it comes to opinions and character, there’s a hard limit to my patience.

More on that tomorrow.

I am trying to learn to say no, when in truth it takes up my time for myself and yet if a friend needs help I am right there by her side, no matter what. I cannot ignore a phone call from a friend who I know needs someone to talk to. Sometimes I wish I can go to a place for even a week without electronics, just the radio for music and books to entertain me. It would be a beautiful week for me, relaxing and I believe healthy too.

That's one reason I go camping several times a year. No cell service. If that's not an option for you, just tell everyone you're going, then stay at home and turn off your phone.
