Yakub Memon hanged. Since morning I have been glued to TV News and now at 7 05 am the News of hanging of Yakub Memon has been now confirmed. This brings and end to the high end drama on execution of Yakub Memon. Yakub is convicted for the Bomb blasts in Mumbai on March 12, 1993. There has been a mockery of legal system in India when a convict after serving 21 years in a Jail is hanged. The judges of Supreme court have differed in opinion on commuting execution and finally yesterday , less than 24 hours before the execution time, the Bench of 3 judges of Supreme Court confirmed execution by hanging. I will not go into the case details and justice is done or not but I have the day of March 12, 1993 itched in my memory. On March 12 , '93 serial Bomb Blasts rocked the city of Mumbai. It has been later declared that 270 people died and over 700 people were injured. Powerful blasts took place in South Bombay in places like Air India Building,, Stock Exchange, Jhaveri Bazaar, Narsee Natha street, Century Bazar in Worli and other places. South Bombay is a commercial hub and has many offices. A lot of people from all over the city commute to South Bombay for work. The city became chaotic. The public transport system had failed. Thousands of families all over the city were anxious about the safety of there kins gone for work. My neighbour was worried about the safety of his working near Stock Exchange, In those days mobiles phones were not yet introduced and all land lines of telephones were completely jammed. At around 6 in the evening we drove towards South Bombay trying to find the missing of my neighbour. We were visiting various public hospitals to check. The sight was gory and terrible. In JJ Hospital, I have seen a chamber were only shred limbs of unknowns were kept. The sight of Blood , flesh and pain was nauseating . I lost sleep for almost a week after that day. Around 11 in the night , from a public phone we contacted home and got good news that neighbour's had managed to reach home safely . Next day I learned that two of my good friends working in Air India Building, who had gone down after lunch were blown out in the blast. There are discussions going on now where the funeral of Yakub Memon will take place and they are not ruling out burial in Central jail Nagpur, if Law and Order situation is likely to be serious if burial is done in Mumbai as planned. We will have to wait and see and hope that peace prevails in days to come. Incidentally Dr Abdul Kalam will also be cremated today at Rameshwaram but this news is completely over shadowed by the hanging of Yakub Memon. Creativity is knowing how to hide your Sources |
