One day, God and satan were having coffee just beyond the outskirts of paradise, while playing chess. Satan was stating as a fact that soon, at the rate mankind is going, he will soon have all the souls down there in his kingdom. God begged to disagree. "In fact I will make a bet with you" said god. "Find one righteous man on earth and try to convince him to worship you instead. If you become successful, i will give you all the souls on earth, on questions asked. The only rule is that you can not harm him physically."

Satan immediately went to earth and sought out the most miserable human being he can find. He figured that they are the ones who may be easily swayed by the promise of pleasure and riches.

Soon, Satan found his mark, an old homeless man who seem to not have eaten for several days.
"I say my good man, do you happen to know who i am?"..."yes sir"..."it seems you need something to eat, what would you say if I take you for a hot meal at a restaurant of your choice?" The man answered, "I will be much obliged sir"..."But first you have to renounce god and worship me" The man slowly stood up and walked away. "Wait!, do you see those fine ladies in the corner, i can give them all to you in an instant!" the man kept walking. "Stop! I will give you all the riches in the world, i will make you the most powerful man in he world, all i ask is that you worship me!" the man just shook his head and moved on. Outraged, satan hurled a ball of fire and struck down the man."whats the matter with you? look at your miserable life, you are living in a rut. what has god ever do for you?"

With his last few remaining breath, the old man replied, "Sir, everything you were willing to give me, i once had. In my time of plenty
I forgot to acknowledge my god for everything he has gave me. Now that he has taken everything away I am more close to him than ever. All this suffering that i am experiencing right now i have gladly accepted if only to atone for my sins. So, there is nothing you can give or do to me that will make me renounce my God."

God took so much pity on the man that he personally went down on earth to fetch the man, body and soul and brought him to paradise with him.
