Geez How Many More Meetings and Working Days Do We Need?:) May 31, 2006 2:06 pm
Mood: bouncy, 868 Views
LOL! Okay, enough already. I am sooooo ready for Summer vacation and after today I am about 1/2 day away. Unfortunately tomorrow I have to go in regular time and sit around at more meetings waiting to check out and finally go home.

This has been a great year for me personally but I want to be done so I can sleep late LOL! I am tired of getting up at 6:15 every morning, especially when the kids have been out since last Friday.

As it is I am so far ahead of last year that I have been done with everything since last Friday.

As it is, on Tuesday I was even starting to get ready for next year, that's how bored I am. LOL! Today was mostly meetings all day. Most who know me, know that I am about as fond of meetings as I am of having a root canal. I realize that some meetings are necessary but I think we just have meetings to satisfy some requirement and not because we really need all these freaking meetings.

Ah well tomorrow we check out and we have a staff luncheon that is held at a fantastic Italian restuarant here in town. It costs $15.00 but I went last year and it's well worth it. Once the luncheon is over I pretty much am free to go home and enjoy my long hot Summer.

Speaking of hot, it HAS been hot here in the big O, almost 90+ yesterday. Tomorrow night I can stay up as late as I want assuming I have anyone worth staying up FOR?LOL!

Graduation Day :) May 30, 2006 1:27 pm
Mood: content, 829 Views
Okay well today is my school's graduation day so tonight I have to help with supervision and crowd control.

Somebody turned off the friggin' air conditioning today for the entire weekend so when we went today it was about 90 degrees in the building. Grrrrrrrrrrrr! No one is claiming responsibility right now but some of us were very annoyed.

Well not too much going on other than graduation but I'm so far ahead of last year that I've got all my paperwork done.

Okay I've found that there are enough ultra sensitive people on FF that if you say anything at all that eventually you'll find a way to hurt someone's feelings even if you don't mean to, even if you put a smiley or a LOL! next to your comment.

So I am just going to say this and that is that I never intentionally mean to insult or hurt anyone else with comments I make or things I say. If I make a comment it's almost always meant in jest if it any way kids or teases someone else.

If people take offense to something I say then they need to know that I'm sorry in advance and if they aren't satisfied with that they should just avoid me in the future and know that they will never have to deal with me ever again.

I am really a very sensitive person who is going through a lot and the last thing I need is for someone to rip into me because of some perceived insult that was meant in jest and was taken wrong even though I used emoticons and put LOL! after it.

Except for a few people my friends on here are of a casual nature. I don't get deep or serious with anybody about anything on the discussion boards. I come on the discussion boards to joke around, flirt and have a good time. If I respond to you it's because I think you're funny, cute or attractive.

Anyway, if you get offended by me, just forget me and move on. That's all I've got to say.

Some Memorial Day Thoughts. May 29, 2006 8:58 am
Mood: contemplative, 756 Views
Warning: Long blog

"There are places I remember. All my life, but some have changed. Some for better, not forever, some are gone, and some remain. All these places have their moments, with lovers and friends I still can recall. Some are dead and some are living, in my life, I've loved them all." From "Places" by the Beatles

Hmmmmm, I've always loved Memorial Day. For me it's always signified the start of Summer the end of a school year and three months of relaxation, travel and vacation. When I was a child it was the first day the swimming pools were open. The last few years it's been a day in which I go and visit cemetaries to place flowers on some special gravesites of people that meant a lot to me and are now gone.

Here are the 4 people I usually think about on Memorial Day:

Daunell-Daunell was a student in my social studies class in 1987-88. She was tall for her age, quite intelligent and attractive. She had a sweet smile and a polite sense of humor. One weekend she was with her brother at a restaurant playing a pinball game when suddenly she had a heart attack. Although it is highly unusual for a 13 year old to have a heart attack apparently she had some undiscovered defect in one of her heart valves. She collapsed in the restaurant and nobody there including her brother knew CPR. She lay unconscious for 10 minutes before the ambulance arrived. The paramedics restarted her heart but she had suffered irreparable brain damage. She died about three days later. When you said goodbye to your kids on a Friday in a 7th grade classroom you never expected for it to be a final goodbye. I still remember her final grade in my class. She had taken it the day she had the heart attack. She got 104%. She was such a bright and happy girl, I always wondered what her life would have been like had someone known CPR? I remember cleaning out her locker in April because no one else had thought to do it. I found little pictures, drawings and papers she'd written in her locker. I couldn't bear to throw them away so I called her mother and asked her if she would like them. Her mother was thrilled, so I drove over to her home and gave the things to her mother. I could see the anguish and yet the gratitude on her mother's face as I went to the door and gave her some small mementos of her lovely daughter.

I still go to Daunell's gravesite every year. It's easy to get to and I still remember her fondly. I'm sure her parents probably wonder who the other person is who places flowers on her grave. It's just a teacher she had almost 20 years ago that has never forgotten her.

Grandma and Grandpa: My mom's mom and dad spent most of their lives in Omaha, not too far from where I presently work. I loved both of my grandparents a great deal. They both lived into their 90's and are both buried just outside of Omaha, so every year I go visit their gravesite and put flowers on their grave. My grandpa died in 1966 when I was 11.

He died on Thanksgiving day. I always remember him taking my older brother and me for long walks along the railroad tracks. He would carry apple and orange slices in his pockets and would share them with us. He had really corny jokes that he would tell, but they still made us laugh. On his 90th birthday we put the trick candles on his cake that couldn't be blown out. We laughed and laughed because he kept blowing them out and they'd restart. We finally told him about the candles and he laughed with us. He was very strict and moral. He wouldn't tolerate any kind of swearing or profanity and he would lecture my brother and me if we did something that he didn't like. He used to play the piano and have us sing along with him. He also loved to play card games with us and even hide and seek in the house.

My grandma lived 20 years beyond my grandpa. She was quite a woman as well. She was a great cook and we used to love to visit for a week in the Summer. My best friend lived three houses away and we had such wonderful fun. Their old house had a pantry whose floor served as a door down to the basement. One day a repairman came and used that pantry door and forgot to shut it. My grandma came to the pantry to get something and fell down the stairs.

My mom got a call from the neighbor to come up to Omaha as quickly as possible. Fortunately she wasn't seriously hurt but my mom decided that it was time for Grandma to move up to Lincoln because the old house was too difficult to take care of and my mom was worried the next time no one would find grandma if she fell. Grandma lived in a nice assisted living facility for several years but eventually my mom and dad had her move into their house.

Grandma fell and broke her hip in the mid 80's. She went to a nursing home, first in Lincoln and then to a small town between Omaha and Lincoln. She didn't like living in nursing homes. She was 99 years old and still loved corn on the cob, which was her favorite food. LOL! In the Summer of 1986, I was just about to leave for a long vacation out to the west coast and just had the feeling I should stop and say hello to grandma. I visited her at the nursing home, showed her pictures of her only grandchild at the time, my son. She was happy to see me and talk to me but she was not feeling well and she really wanted to go home. I talked to her, squeezed her hand, told her I loved her and she died while I was on my trip.

I didn't find out until I was able to call home and reach my parents on the day of her funeral. This was the decade before everyone had cellphones and so I missed grandma's funeral but she's buried right alongside my grandpa. She was a widow for 20 years, but she never wanted to be with another man or get remarried. My grandma and grandpa were something special.

The last person I always remember is my dad. Dad was a loving, caring man. He was usually gentle and soft spoken although he had a temper and you didn't want to push him if he got angry. LOL! Dad taught me and my brother how to play chess, how to drive a car, how to fish, and how to fix things, especially cars. Dad would play games with us. He taught us how to play Bridge.

Dad was in the army-airforce in World War II, but he never had to serve on the battlefield. His job was to train pilots how to operate B17 fighter bombers. He came from a poor but large family in Omaha. He went to high school that I almost got a job at. Instead I ended up working at a school where my mom went. LOL!

Dad used to take us fishing a lot. We loved to go to Minnesota especially, but also to Colorado and even places in Nebraska on weekends where we had the time. In my family dad was the easy going one and mom was a little more high strung but my brother and I loved both of our parents equally. My dad had some heart problems. When he was a child he'd had rheumatic fever and it had damaged his heart some. He also smoked for many years which probably didn't help either.

The last time I saw dad was in March of 1994. He and mom had come up for my son's birthday. Dad had just undergone a risky procedure on his heart because his heart was malfunctioning and he could barely get out of bed. This procedure made him feel a lot better but it also probably caused his death too. On Monday March 14, 1994, I came to work and there was an urgent message from my mom saying that dad had collapsed and had been taken by rescue squad to the hospital. I left school and drove up to Lincoln. When I got there it was too late. Dad had lain unconscious too long before being revived. He never regained consciousness. He officially died on March 15th the same date in history as Julius Caesar.

My brother and I wept over our dad together but we really remembered what a great dad he'd been and how much we'd loved and treasured him. He's buried in Lincoln so when I go up there around Memorial Day I usually try to get out to his gravesite. His funeral was very moving. He loved Irish folk music and we had a soprano with a beautiful voice sing Danny Boy. There wasn't a dry eye in the church. It's sometimes hard for me to believe he's been gone over 12 years.

If you made it all the way to this point thanks for reading my thoughts about people I remember in my own life. Hope you all have a happy Memorial Day even in countries where you don't really celebrate it.

Hmmmm a Lazy Sunday. May 28, 2006 11:29 am
Mood: bored, 683 Views
You know I haven't been really inspired lately to blog a lot. I guess sometimes I feel in a really goofy or deviously silly mood and will write two or three of these in a day. Then there are other times when no real umph comes to me and I want to really say much.

Well what's going on in Brucey's life? First of all they have instituted Saturday night karaoke at my watering hole so last night at about 11:00 PM I decided to check it out and it wasn't bad. Fortunately they aren't going to do it EVERY week because I don't think I could manage 3 karaoke nights a week right now, except maybe in the Summer. I sang twice last night but I didn't get there until 11:00.

Yesterday early evening I went to a surprise anniversary party for my 1st Cousin and her husband. It was almost like a family reunion because members of several branches of my family were there. We usually only see each other once a year, but this time it was for a happy occasion and not for a death or funeral.

Another Night to Sing. :) May 26, 2006 2:41 pm
Mood: bouncy, 841 Views
Oooo not only is it Brucey's karaoke night tonight but it was also the last day of school so I am feeling really good and although I still have to go in next week for meetings and checkouts this year is history.

I'd rank it as the 2nd best teaching year in the last 10 years for me personally. Felt great all the way to the end and am very proud of my kids.

Not sure what I'll sing tonight but most likely there'll be some Green Day, some Oasis, and some Kenny Rogers. Hahahahaha kind of an odd combo there I realize.

Should be interesting also to see if it's busy or dead. I'm guessing it will be busy but you never know.

Last Monday of the School Year. May 22, 2006 6:51 pm
Mood: tired, 925 Views
Well it was a fairly easy day and it was also the last Monday of the school year. Next week is Memorial Day so there's not even ANY school.

I have been keeping busy with tons of paper work to do. Today I collected together my senior's textbooks and checked them in. Still have a lot of things to do before the year is finished up.

Checked out another apartment today. It was a 1 bedroom and with a month's free rent it's actually cheaper than the efficiency I liked. It's a good location too but it's older and I wasn't as impressed by the run down nature of the halls and stairwells. Also, no dishwasher in the kitchen, however it DOES have a bedroom AND a living room. This one had wood floors which some people like but I'm not that thrilled with.

I still have a couple more to check out. In some ways a one bedroom would be nice because then I could have a bed instead of sleeping on a futon.

Well it's been warm here which isn't surprising as things tend to warm up really quickly after May 15th around here. I'm feeling kinda tired today because we had a long meeting after school tonight and then I went to my other job. Hehehe of course I MIGHT be staying UP too late too, but naaaaaahhhhhh
