The Bad News and The Good News. Apr 28, 2007 12:24 pm
Mood: optimistic, 471 Views
Well I am mostly a glass is half full kind of person so I'm going to mention the bad news along with some good news about what's been going on in my life.

The bad news is that I have been sick since Monday night with a bad head cold.

The good news is that I feel better today after getting plenty of rest yesterday. Also I didn't lose my voice.

The bad news is that I only got in about 5 hours at my second job so far out of a normally expected 20.

The good news is that they are letting people take as much time off as needed right now due to short workload without being penalized or asked to use their personal days.

The bad news is that I missed 2.5 days of school last week.

The good news is that this is the first time all school year I've been sick.

The bad news is that several of my relatives have serious life threatening conditions.

The good news is that they are all still with me as I write this.

The bad news is that I had to fork out $70.00 for a new lawn mower today because my old one is shot.

The good news is that I just discovered one of my income tax refunds came in already so it won't cause me any financial stress.

The bad news is that I won't make a lot of money at my second job this week due to so much time off.

The good news is that I can relax, further rest my voice and just enjoy the beautiful day here.

And the good news is that I love my own life, I'm pretty happy and am just going to kick back and hope for the best for my relatives who are in trouble.

And there is no more bad news.

It S*cks to Be Sick. :( Apr 27, 2007 1:45 pm
Mood: sick, 503 Views
Okay, well since Monday night I have felt one of these nasty Spring colds coming on. I had been fortunate this school year in that I had not been sick enough (until this week) to miss a single day of school.

I managed to get into work Tuesday despite the impending sensation that this time the dreaded cold was not going to be avoided.

On Wednesday I called in sick and took the day off, hoping that one day would be enough. I managed to make it through Thursday but this morning despite using cough syrup and some over the counter meds, I went into work hoping to get my second wind.

Unfortunately, instead of feeling better once at work I found by about 10:30 that I was just not going to make it through the rest of the day. So my boss sent me home I love her she is the greatest.

I got home by 11:30, put on my pjs and hopped into bed and slept until 3:00 PM. Last night I went to bed an hour earlier than normal as well so I think that my body is telling me something

Anyway, I'm hoping that now that I've made it to the weekend that I can be back to normal by Monday.

Breaking My String. Apr 25, 2007 6:07 am
Mood: sick, 545 Views
Well today I called in sick for the first time all school year. That is actually pretty good for me to make it to almost the end of April without using a single sick day.

I have the beginnings of a cold today and just don't feel all that good, so I decided to rest up and take it easy.

Of course being the responsible person I am I got up at 6:30 anyway and drove in to prepare everything for my sub because the sub would not be able to figure out where everything is or exactly what to do without it being organized and ready to go.

Having substituted for 2 years myself I know that it is such a relief to come in and find organized plans and materials ready to go. I just got home and will probably take a rest here after I write this blog.

Overall, this year my health has been pretty good. There were a couple days that I could have called in sick but I didn't. Actually today if I'd been in line for a bonus or something I might have gone in, but since I'm not in line for a bonus after taking a personal day, I decided to for once let my body overrule my sense of responsibility here and just relax.

Skipping Out on Karaoke Tuesday :) Apr 24, 2007 7:41 pm
Mood: sick, 449 Views
Well this is fairly rare but I decided for a couple reasons to skip going to karaoke tonight. The first reason is that I am skirting the edge of a cold and although I went to both of my jobs today the prospect of singing and also sitting in a smokey bar didn't appeal to me.

Secondly, my budget is a bit tight right now and I need to save the money. I figured I could relax at home for free or go out and spend $5.00 on drinks and several dollars for gas to get out there and back.

Thirdly, it's a long ways out there and although I considered going just to say hi, and sing maybe once I decided that was kind of silly to drive about 20 miles just to sing one song.

So here I am typing a blog at 9:39 PM on a Tuesday night where I'd normally be out singing still. Hopefully I will be fine by Friday night and can do my regular Friday night karaoke at Landslide.

A Collection of Some Pearls of Wisdom from Movies. Apr 22, 2007 7:17 pm
Mood: beautiful, 632 Views
Even though movies are made to entertain the lines that the characters sometimes speak in movies are very profound and they are filled with wisdom in some cases. Here are just a few lines from some movies that I know that inspire or make me think how profound the person was who composed them originally:

"Strange, how a man touches so many lives and when he's not there it leaves a huge hole." The Guardian Angel Clarence from It's a Wonderful Life.

"This is not the end, death is just another path we all must take eventually." Gandalf from Lord of the Rings, Return of the King.

"How we face death is as important as how we face life." Captain Kirk, From Star Trek II, Wrath of Khan.

"Now I have come to the crossroads in my life and I always knew what was the right path, but I didn't take it and do you know why? Because it was too d*mn hard." Lt. Col. Frank Slade from Scent of a Woman.

"No man is a failure who has friends" Written in Huckleberry Finn by Clarence the Guardian Angel to George Bailey at the end of It's a Wonderful Life.

"Trust me. Trust it's what friends do." Dori from Finding Nemo.

"You wanta know what you gotta do? Just keep swimming, just keep swimming." Dori from Finding Nemo.

"We can only do what is possible in the time that we have." The ghost of Christmas Present in The Christmas Carol.

"No I've never faced death, not like this. I've always cheated death and then patted myself on the back for my ingenuity." Captain Kirk from Wrath of Khan.

"No, it's not the logical thing to do, but it is the human thing to do." Mr. Spock from Star Trek IV the Voyage Home.

"Many live who deserve death and many die who deserve to live. Would you give it to them Frodo?" Gandalf from Lord of the Rings, Fellowship of the Ring.

I apologize if I didn't get these quotes precisely right. They are by my recollection and I did not go check to make sure they were verbatim

Just a Few Words About Inconsideration. Apr 15, 2007 11:12 am
Mood: annoyed, 535 Views
Okay this is just a Brucey mini-rant here but I wonder sometimes how much happier everyone would be in this world if they were just a little more considerate of other people?

Last night I saw the inconsideration of a bar. For the last couple months my friend Chris who is a karaoke DJ had been doing karaoke out in a small town called Elkhorn.

So I hadn't been out there for a few weeks so what the heck, at about 9:00 PM I got in my car and made the 30 minute drive all the way out there to meet him and maybe sing.

When I got there I was a little surprised because the past few times I'd been there the place was jammed and there were few places to sit down or even park my car. This time however the place was strangely dead and I parked in a place about 10 feet from the front door, never a good sign.

I went in and the place looked like a funeral parlor. There were about 5 people, average age about 62 sitting in the game room to my left, presumably playing keno and there were two bartenders serving practically nobody. And of course Chris was not there which is obvious because had he been there the place would have been filled with people.

The bartender told me that they had decided to stop doing karaoke and weren't going to do it again any time soon. Normally I am a faithful patron of a place. If I show up to sing, I also buy something too to support the business even if it's not a requirement. But this just made me mad and I had the feeling that Chris had been fired and not given much notice because he mentioned nothing to me the night before on Friday when I told him I might be out to see him the next night.

So I bought nothing and instead got back in my car. Rather than go directly home I decided to drive to the Landslide where I go on Friday and see if there was anything happening there? The parking lot was full but it turned out that I knew only about two people in the bar and there was a huge birthday party going on and there was no real place to sit down.

I talked to Shafiq who is the DJ there on Saturday nights and I asked him what was going on with Chris and the situation in Elkhorn? He told me that the bar (which is a chain of Irish pubs) had fired their manager in Elkhorn and that the new guy they put out there hates karaoke so he just told Chris that karaoke was done. No warning, no notice, just simply said, we're not doing it so don't come out here anymore.

Now I don't know why the fired the OTHER manager but to me this is a pin headed inconsiderate attitude on the part of the new manager. Not only did he weasel out of a contract, he also wrecked up attendance at the very business he has been asked to manage and he made me waste an hour of my Saturday night because of his lack of consideration.

It will be a long time before I will patronize his business or any of the other pubs with the same name in the chain. I hope that he is willing to accept responsibility for the decline or possible failure of his business because of his shortsightedness.

The proper thing to do would have been to finish out the month and at least honor your contract and also to give the customers some decent notice that the bar has changed its philosophy and decided to stop doing karaoke on Saturdays.

My guess is, that bar lost thousands of dollars last night based on the numbers Chris was pulling in there compared to the pathetic number that were there last night when I walked in.

What goes around comes around and when people make short sighted stupid business decisions and show a lack of consideration for their partners and their patrons it comes back to bite them in the profit-loss column.

Spending the Evening Karaoking With My Daughter. Apr 14, 2007 11:07 am
Mood: cheerful, 629 Views
Well my daughter is in town from St. Louis. Last night I picked her up at 9:00 PM or so and we headed over to Landslide to karaoke together. Originally the plan was that she would head back home if she got bored but she ended up having a great time and so did I.

First of course everyone wondered who my hot date was so they all came over to talk to me to find out LOL!

There were a lot of new people in the place that I'd never seen before, but quite a few of them wanted to sing, so I ended up singing three times and because she was expecting a phone call for work she waited for a bit and ended up singing twice during the night.

I sang, The Gambler, Words, and I Wanta Be Sedated and she sang Last Dance by Donna Summer and My Humps by Black Eyed Peas which cracked everyone up. Hahahaha and before anyone asks, NO, I didn't do My Humps with her the DJ did the "She's got me spendin...." part

We ended up having a lot of fun and staying really until close. My daughter is married to a cardiologist and works full time as a sales rep for a major corporation in St. Louis.

She is a very successful, beautiful, hardworking young woman. I am very proud of her. This morning she, her mother and I went downtown and ate lunch together before we drove her to the airport to catch her flight home.

Already Half Way Through April :) Apr 13, 2007 2:23 pm
Mood: hungry, 503 Views
Wow this month has flown by but I think part of the reason is because we had the whole first week off for Spring Break, so having just finished a full week of school after Spring Break we are already up to April 15th on Sunday. Friday the 13th is never unlucky for me because it means I get paid 2 days earlier than normal and boy it couldn't have come any quicker as I was down virtually nothing in my cupboard, fridge and freezer.

I'll definitely have to do a major grocery shopping trip because I have very little choices left in the house to make meals with.

Well my daughter is in town and she is leaving tomorrow so we are going to go out and sing karaoke tonight at the Landslide, my regular Friday night hangout.

She's a good singer, she likes to sing Donna Summer. She lives in St. Louis but is visiting for 4 days.

Well since it was payday tonight after work I headed downtown to pay some bills and now I'm just relaxing before heading out to my part time job and then from there on to karaoke.

Hope everyone enjoys their weekend and don't forget to get your taxes done . I did mine last week so I can relax now.
