Random Thoughts. A Potpourri of Unrelated Things in My Head :) Jun 25, 2007 3:02 pm

I hate chiggers. Chiggers are nasty little grass mites that burrow under your skin and itch like crazy. For about the last 7 years or so I have had Summer time infestation of chiggers in the back yard of our house. My son has a big 4th of July thingie planned and we need to find some way to kill these nasty little things so they don't make our guests lives miserable in the week following.

It is hot today. I need to get on my suit and go swimming but I don't want to frighten anyone LOL!

Gosh did this day go by fast with what seems like very little of importance really happening I got up at almost 11 am , then by the time I fixed lunch it was already 2 pm.

I did take care of a couple important things that are business related but otherwise I have felt like a gigantic lazy blob today LOL

I am thinking of renting a car to go to Yellowstone. There are a couple reasons why, one is gas mileage and the other is lease miles on my car. My car has almost 1.5 years left on it's lease and right now I am within 500 miles of being at 36,000 miles which is my allowable mileage at the 3 year mark. If I take my car to Yellowstone it will exceed the 36,000 miles 5 months ahead of schedule. I called the dealership the other day and they told me that if I go over 48,000 at the end of the lease there is an overage penalty of 20 cents per mile. Just doing the math, I can rent a car for about 200 and if this trip put me over my final 48,000 by 2000 miles that would cost me $400.00

Only thing is that renting a car can be a hassle too and it does cost money up front. Still I am seriously considering it.

Also my car is a good travel car with removable seats and lots of room to store equipment. But it doesn't get great mileage although neither do all rental cars.

One of My Dullest Weekends in Awhile. Jun 23, 2007 11:23 pm
Mood: bored, 495 Views
Hmmm well I thought it was going to be an exciting weekend but actually both my Friday and my Saturday nights were kind of a letdown.

Last night I ended in a keno parlor believe it or not and lost about $10.00. I ended up there because my attempt to meet up with Chris like last week was a miserable flop. So no karaoke, lost $10.00 and ended up coming home and just doing what I do most of the time which is chatting. That was about the highlight of my night.

Tonight the finals of the College World Series started so I decided to drive down there because I thought Chris had told me he'd be there playing music. But when I got there he wasn't there. I wandered around and there were lots of people but no one I really knew and I didn't want to spend a bunch of money so I left and came home for the second weekend night in a row.

I really miss Friday karaoke and I still haven't found anything adequate to replace it yet. I have started going to this new place where my friend Ronda works now, but she's only there on Thursday nights and she's been out of town the past two weeks.

Ah well time to put myself and my boredom to bed for the night

Ganun? It's Psycho-Pinay Jun 22, 2007 9:20 pm
Mood: annoyed, 640 Views
Okay I have many friends in the Philippines that I talk to regularly. Most of them I have met here on FF on the instant message system.

So tonight I settle in and I get an instant message from a Pinay girl that I've chatted with a few times and she tells me to "f myself".

I said, "Woh what did I do?", and she tells me that I have been ignoring her and never chat with her anymore. Well wow, isn't that interesting since if she knew I was online and didn't page me to chat, how am I any more to blame for not chatting with her than she is?

Plus, I told her that I thought she had found a new boyfriend and so I didn't want to interfere. At that point she said, "f you" to me again and so I told her, "If you don't want to be friends anymore or want to chat then just delete me." She says she will and then she tells me not to try and contact her anymore. I think that's pretty much a given. LOL

Just what I need is being friends with psycho-Pinay.

Goodbye forever to Spring 07 :( Jun 20, 2007 9:29 pm
Mood: contemplative, 505 Views
Well Spring is history. It is now officially Summer here in the northern hemisphere. Of course most people feel that Summer starts on Memorial Day but officially the solstice where the sun reaches it's most northern latitude in the sky happens on June 20th, marking the official start of Summer.

Contrary to popular belief the days do NOT start getting longer they actually get shorter in the northern hemisphere because June 21st is the longest day of the year with more daylight in the north than any other day.

So goodbye to the Spring of 2007. It was Spring that saw me lose a brother and finish another school year, my third in this same place. It was a mild Spring by Nebraska standards with fairly decent weather here.

Goodbye Spring, hello Summer. Today it was hot here. I don't know how this Summer will compare with past ones? Maybe it will be hotter or cooler or maybe just typical.

I think that it will be hot but that is really typical. Usually June is pretty rainy and cooler but July and August are searingly hot. We haven't had lots of rain so far but all indications seem to be that it will be hot.

The Ups and Downs of Cells. :) Jun 19, 2007 10:00 am
Mood: devious, 480 Views
Warning, long but funny blog

Okay, cell phones are one of those things that make your life so much easier at times and drive you crazy at other times. They are kind of like women for me. LOL

My cell phone company is literally the phone company from h*ll . I won't say their name but they are the company that runs really fast. LOL !

How can I describe them except to say that they are big, uncaring, stupid, ridiculous, frustrating and annoying. LOL! I think of them as the "Walmart of the cellphone industry".

And yet they are the only cell phone company I've ever been with. Why don't I change? I don't know, maybe I'm just a glutton for punishment but I think I'm just one of those people who has to have a really good reason to change. Plus, the people that I talk to when I have a problem there (once I actually GET to a person) are super nice and always try to go out of their way to help me.

Okay this is a purrrr and grrrrrr blog here. First let's deal with the grrrrrs of which there are many with my cell phone company. About two weeks ago the internet on my phone started acting up. It was very frustrating because in mid conversation my internet would boot me off and sometimes shut my phone down. My initial self-diagnosis (never self diagnose, it's like being your own lawyer, was that it might be my battery. It turned out that it wasn't but more on that later.

So I take it to the local "Company that runs really fast" store and to my amazement there was virtually no wait on that particular day but the only problem was it was 3 days before payday and they told me it would probably cost me $25.00 to fix it so I said I would wait until payday.

On Thursday night I decided to pay my bill as I always do by telephone. First when calling the "Company that runs really fast" you have to deal with their automated "virtual b*tch" Claire. LOL ! She is very annoying and wastes several minutes of your time to get you to the wrong place for your needs LOL . Once in the wrong place you must call back at least once and deal with her again before you figure out what to tell her so she'll actually let you talk to a human.

When I go to the bill pay feature I found out that I have to have a passcode to use it, something which I didn't ever have to have before, but the company that runs really fast just recently merged with another company making them even more bureaucratic and stupid. LOL

So I tried a couple of passcodes I thought might be correct and naturally they weren't, so I then have to call back the virtual b*tch Claire again to get transferred to an actual person who can help me just so I can pay them. Finally I get put on freakin' hold naturally and am told (by automated voice of course) that it will be up to 20 minutes before someone is available to talk to me.

Meanwhile they play this hideous music probably used by agents in 3rd world countries to torture captured prisoners until they spill what they know. LOL! Finally, after 20 minutes of listening to music from the 7th plane of h*ll, I reach a live operator who tells me she can give me the passcode but that their systems are all down so she can't actually pay my bill and I have to call back tomorrow to pay it. LOL! This company is so freakin' lame they won't even let me pay my bill.

So then I have to call back the virtual b*tch yet again and this time I AM able to finally pay my bill by just using their automated system. Never mind that it took almost an hour of my time to pay THEM. By this time I have considered talking dirty to Claire just to pay them back, but thought better of it in case it was recorded LOL

Okay so continuing on, my phone was still malfunctioning so on Friday I head back to the nearby "Company that runs really fast" store and this time when I go in you'd have thought it was freaking Macy's on the Friday after Thanksgiving There is a minimum 45 minute wait just to talk to someone, so I said I'd come back the following week. Instead I went and bought a new battery for $40.00, hoping it would solve the problem which of course it didn't. (I told you earlier, never self diagnose, it's like serving as your own lawyer) .

I did really need a new battery though as my other one was discharging really quickly and had to be on power cord or would tap out in about an hour and a half.

So yesterday (Monday) I headed back yet again to the local "company that runs really fast" store and this time I got in with a wait of only 20 minutes. Naturally I had trouble getting the phone to act up as it had been doing for two weeks when a tech was standing there watching, is that typical or what? I left the phone for an hour which is the standard time. When I came back they weren't done cause they couldn't get the phone to act up like it had been for two weeks.

But as I said this is also a purrr thread, right as I was talking to the tech repairing it, the thing shut down just like it had been doing. He instantly knew what was wrong with it and said it would take about 30 minutes to fix because he had to reload my software. So I went back home, ate dinner and then came back and picked up the phone. Like I said, "the company that runs really fast" has great people working for them. It's not the people it's the bureaucratic inefficiency that is the problem. Cell phone companies are like banks and mortgage companies, they are so big and inefficient that they drive you nuts.

The final purrrrr about all of this was that they fixed it for free. Because it was a software issue they didn't have to repair anything so what I thought was going to cost me about $25.00 to $35.00 ended up being a cost of zero. Kind of makes up for all those videos I bought yesterday at the used video store.

I will almost certainly remain with "the company that runs really fast", because I like their people, plus who knows maybe Claire will go out with me if I give her the right command LOL .

Good Samaritanism, a Dying Art? :) Jun 18, 2007 11:55 am
Mood: beautiful, 608 Views
Most of us know what good Samaritanism is, it's offering aid and comfort to a stranger. It gets its name from the famous Christian parable about how the only person who helps a man who has been beaten and robbed is a man from a country where most of the people are hated and despised by others. Hence the term "good Samaritan".

While most everyone familiar with it loves the story because it shows the compassionate and generous side of humans towards strangers I'm wondering if we have become so fearful of crime in today's world that we give little or no consideration to being that 21st Century version of "the good Samaritan".

Well today oddly enough I experienced some of that slight nervousness when a younger African American man approached me in the video store and asked me if I could give him a ride back to his house so he could go pick up his 6 year old child from daycare.

Although it might have been taking a huge chance I am pretty kind hearted and so after briefly talking to him I told him I would give him a ride. Other than finding out his name was Tim I didn't even know his last name but I DID give him a ride back to his home which was not in the greatest part of town. He had walked all the way to where I was to work and he hadn't been paid yet. He asked me if he could borrow some money to buy some food for his 6 year old too, so I even ended up giving him $3.00. I'm a softie what can I say?

Well I just want to say that it worked out and afterwards I felt like I had done the right thing and it gave me a good feeling, but I think that people are very fearful now days of strangers and I know that many people would have said, "no" and they would have even told me I was crazy for doing it because he could have robbed me or worse, but I work in this area and I have a love and a feeling for the people of this community and I don't feel that fear that some do. Maybe that makes me a bit of a naive fool or maybe it just makes me a 21st Century Good Samaritan.

I'm glad I don't have to do it everyday but in this case it worked out fine and I think I did the right thing, because in my opinion some human compassion and generosity for others is worth a small amount of personal risk.

I'm Here for the Party. :) Jun 18, 2007 8:31 am
Mood: bouncy, 571 Views
Hahaha that was pretty much my theme this past weekend. On Friday night the NCAA College World Series started. It will last all through next weekend and will end either Sunday the 24th or Monday a week from today.

The first two days are sort of like the Omaha Version of Mardi Gras. Thirteenth street next to the stadium where the games are played becomes party central. It is really quite a spectacle as people pitch tents and awnings and tailgate all around the parking lot. Men, women and children of all ages wander up and down 13th eating at little restaurants, drinking at some of the many beer garden tents set up to accomodate the visitors. Eight different universities and their fans come to be a part of what might be a once in a lifetime event for their school. Some schools dream their whole life of coming here because there are probably almost 120 NCAA division I schools with baseball teams and only 8 of those teams qualify. This year the defending national champions from Oregon State are here as are perenniel powerhouses like Cal State Fullerton and Rice. The cool thing is that no year has the same exact teams as the year before.

Did I mention the view? Well let me tell you if you like the opposite gender, it is very pleasing to the eye as there are thousands of men and women that are very good looking, wearing some pretty nice outfits wandering about drinking, eating, dancing and just hanging out. Plus the first Friday and Saturday are the most fun because all 8 teams are still in contention and no one has been eliminated yet, because it's double elimination.

As it happens my good friend Chris who is a DJ works at one of the little eating establishments next to the stadium on Friday and Saturday. So I decided to go down and hang out with him both nights about 9:30.

The huge advantage of coming at 9:30 is that the games are over and you can get a parking place right near where all the partying action is going on. Since I was there for the party and not for the games I just headed down there between 9 and 10. The downside was that the city closes down alcohol sales at the beer tents two hours before it closes down bars and clubs so everyone had to clear out at 11:00 pm, but I still really had fun.

On Friday two other people I know, Dick and Vicki were there with Chris, hanging out. On Saturday another friend Becky was there hanging out. I wondered why Becky wasn't with her husband and then last night I found out that she and her husband who only recently got married are having serious marital problems and they might divorce already.

Did I mention that I even got to dance both nights. Hahahaha, on Friday this lady pulled me onto the dance floor and started dancing with me. Then on Saturday these two girls pulled me out there to dance. Hahahaha, they did The Humpty Hump with me. I'm not telling what that is if you don't know but there is a song that goes with it.

After the place closed on Saturday at 11:00 I offered to give Chris and Becky a ride to Chris' car and when I saw just how far away from the stadium he had to park his car I understood why he was so grateful. I was basically about 2 blocks away in the stadium parking lot, because I didn't come until 9:30, but he was literally 2 miles away. Plus if he and Becky had walked they would have had to walk in some very spooky and remote areas just to get to his car. Given that her husband is acting strangely she was grateful not to have to walk that far herself.

A Hot Day. :) Jun 16, 2007 5:24 pm
Mood: hot, 591 Views
Well today it felt like Nebraska Summer here as it reached into the 90's. I didn't get a whole lot done today.

I spent most of the day in the nearby town of Fremont looking at cars and by the time I got back home and grabbed a bite to eat, it was time to go to work.

I haven't decided yet, but I am considering going back down to the CWS tonight as it was kind of fun last night and at least it gave me something to do other than sitting around chatting online or watching a video I've already seen.

I'm making hamburger chow mein casserole right now which my mom used to make years ago and I love. Basically you boil rice, fry hamburger, add soy sauce, mushroom soup and mix it all together and bake it in the oven. Then the last 20 minutes or so you top it with chow mein noodles.

I've made a big amount so I'll have some tomorrow because I won't finish it all today.
I would consider going karoaking but still don't really have a place I like that much on Saturdays, plus my friend Chis the DJ is back down at the CWS again so that's why I was thinking I might go back there.
