| Farewell to Summer :) |
Sep 3, 2007 12:44 pm Mood: nostalgic, 713 Views | | "Summer, has come an passed the innocent can never last. Wake me up, when September ends." From Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day.
Today is the last oasis in the desert as the Summer ends. It is the last island in the sea surrounded by an ocean of Fall on its way. It is Labor Day here, a national holiday that traditionally marks a goodbye to Summer and a hello to Fall, even though Summer's official end is not until September 22nd.
This has been an overall good Summer although it went way too fast as they often seem to do now that I am older. The highlight of my Summer was my trip to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons with my son in July.
Today I am mostly relaxing and I just took a swim, probably the last one I'll get in before they drain the pools. Don't I look good in my suit?
Years ago, schools didn't start until after Labor Day but as the schools came under increasing pressure to add days of instruction to the school calendar year, the start of school now occurs around here about two weeks preceeding Labor Day. Still I would rather start before Labor Day, than go into mid June if given the choice.
I would still prefer the good old days where we came after Labor Day and got out before Memorial Day if I had my way
I hope all of my friends are well and happy this day even if it is not a holiday where you live. Today it is warm here so it still feels like a Summer Monday. |

| Joy Comes From Sadness. |
Aug 26, 2007 2:55 pm Mood: contemplative, 771 Views | Okay, my sister in law has been facing a life threatening liver condition for years. In the past year she has been hospitalized at least five times and has been near death at least three times.
Yesterday my sister in law received a life saving liver transplant. She is doing miraculously well and she should be able to live a normal, healthy happy life. That is the great news, the sad news of course is that obviously in order for her to get a liver transplant that the donor had to perish.
In this case it was a 22 year old man who was in a car accident. He had irrecoverable head injuries but he had donated his organs upon his death and so his liver saved the life of my sister in law and his heart saved the life of another patient who needed a heart transplant and I think that even his kidneys may have saved someone's life who needed a kidney transplant.
The feelings that run through your mind in situations like this are that it is bittersweet to think that in order for someone to live that someone else dies. Still all of us would like to thank that young man for having the courage and the selflessness to sign up to be an organ donor. That does not make his loss acceptable nor will it be much comfort to his family or loved ones but at least they can know that their son's death provided life to several others mostly because he had the foresight to think ahead about being selfless after he was gone.
When a door closes another often opens somewhere. When this young man closed the door and left this life, he opened a new door for my sister in law and for this I thank him from the bottom of my heart. I only wish I could be there to tell him personally how much his ultimate gift meant to my sister and law and those who love her. | |

| In All My Years... |
Aug 22, 2007 6:55 pm Mood: sick, 662 Views | | As a teacher I had never missed the first day of school before, at least not until today. On Sunday night I started getting that really uncomfortable feeling I get whenever a cold is coming on.
I made it through Monday but by Monday evening I knew I was in trouble. Yesterday, I called in sick in the AM, hoping I would be better with some rest but even after going in for only 1/2 the day, I felt even worse last night.
So I did something I had never done before I called for a substitute on the first day of school. The good news is that although today was technically the first day of school we only had Freshmen and I don't teach any Freshmen classes so hopefully no harm was done.
Right now after sleeping off and on for about 12 hours since last night, I am feeling slightly better with the help of some cold medicine that I ventured out to buy today.
I was thinking about it and in all the years I've been teaching this is the first time I can ever remember calling in sick on day one. That is pretty amazing but I'm definitely glad I didn't go today because I was not feeling well at all. |

| Of Storms, Schools, Colds and Allergies. |
Aug 20, 2007 7:57 pm Mood: sick, 583 Views | | Well I am either having allergies right now or I am feeling the onset of a head cold. I'm not sure which but it could be either one.
I started feeling that uneasy feeling last night and tonight it's worse. Then tonight we had a tornado warning here that lasted about 35 minutes.
The good news is we got paid for the down time. No major damage from what I could tell. We've had some really bad storms around here lately.
One more day of preparation and then the freshmen come back. Then the day after everyone is back and the school year officially starts.
We have way too many freakin' meetings. It would be nice to have a few days to get ready instead we constantly have meetings.
I don't want to use up a sick day on a prep day so I'll probably try to go in and just fight this off. I should get some Claritin or something in case it's allergy related. |

| Hi Ho :) |
Aug 15, 2007 2:39 pm Mood: moody, 669 Views | | Well it was back to work today for me. I've been in a bit of a funk lately for several reasons but I think getting back to work will help me more than anything else.
Today we had a get together downtown and it was kind of interesting because we had the lady whose story was recounted in the movie Dangerous Minds which starred Michelle Pfeifer, as our keynote speaker. She is pretty good and entertaining as a speaker.
I got an extra long lunch and then this afternoon just started some preliminary work on getting ready for the school year which officially starts a week from today.
This should be a good year I think and I am now tenured so I don't have to have class observations and visitations like I have had the past three years.
I think one of the things that has been bothering me, has been this feeling that I am getting older and that the years seem to be flying by faster and faster. Of course there is nothing I can do about it, but as a Summer ends it is always a cold slap in the face to think of facing yet another school year.
I said the other day to a friend, "I am not upset or disappointed about my life. On the contrary I love my life and if I had to live it over I'd not have a different life. What I really want is another life . I want to keep the life I've already lived and live an entirely new one filled with fun and excitement. Not a better life, just another great one."
But, of course the laws of reality and nature don't cooperate. One other thing and that is that some financial stuff beyond my control has really annoyed me lately too.
But since I am unable to really change any of these things, the best thing is for me to make the best of the things I can change. One thing I've always liked about a new school year starting is the feeling of starting over, of getting a whole new group of kids, of throwing out dumb ideas that bombed and trying new ones to see if they'll work better.
I wouldn't change what I do for anything. That doesn't mean I wouldn't like to make more money, of course I would, but when I made the choice to dedicate my life to helping young people I have never looked back and said, "Wow, I really picked the wrong career path, what was I thinking?"
I still run into former students all the time, many times at karaoke. I wouldn't know them, but they still know me and they come up to me and say hello, which tells me I had a lasting influence on them. That to me makes it all worthwhile.
I can't do anything about getting older, but I can do something about living a life that is enjoyable and productive. That is what I can do. That is what I will do. |
