| Jim Crow |
May 8, 2008 7:57 am Mood: gloomy, 968 Views | | WHO...is Jim Crow anyway? And HOW did his name get attached to racial predjudice in southern USA? Or was his name made up? there is STILL plenty of racial predjudice in USA and I am NOT just talking about the skinheads. In Baltimore, there are clubs that do not allow whites, just like in the 1940's. There is a club called "Arch Club for Black Men") So it apparently excludes females too. I grew up in Maryland and many bars had a "colored" section and a "white" section. There was a swimming pool in Glen Echo park that only allowed black people to swim on one day, and then the pool was drained and refilled and then only whites were allowed in on another day. Then there were the drinking fountains. Public buildings had brown drinking fountains that were colored only, and then there were white drinking fountains that were white only. Today, black people are called "African American". But it is still OK to say "white boy" instead of "European American". In the 1970's, there was a restaurant in Maryland called "Sambo's". Black people were offended by the name, but the owners said it was simply an anacronym. But inside the restaurant, the walls were decorated with pics of "Little Black Sambo". The restaurant soon went out of business. The house that I bought in Baltimore was occupied in the 1990's by a hate group who had parties with live bands who would sing "Kill the n------s". In the 21st century, it was occupied by crack addicts before I moved in and became a heroin junkie and a crack smoker myself before losing the house. Now I am living here in yankee territory in West Virginia, but many whites fly the confererate flag. Jim Crow is very much alive today in America. Does he live near you> | |
