Busy, busy, busy. I was kinda hoping for a good snow over the holidays to catch my breath. But that snow bandit Nancy (amazinggrace1954) keeps taking it all up north and we got just a dusting. We've been battling the wind tho. No one stepped up to steal that.
There's nothing better then holding a 14 inch square kite (a hoc) in your hand while standing on a ten inch wide plank, twenty five feet off the ground. In a thirty mph plus wind.

Political news: Love 'em or hate 'em, this years election has the potential to be very interesting and possibly historic.

Celebrity news: Britney is still wacko.

Financial news: Ack! Gas prices. 'Nuff said.

Smoking report. I am ashamed. I broke my promise and I'm still smoking. I have cut it down to half of what I was, but I still feel lower then a bug crawling under a pregnant snake.

A carpet installer decides to take a cigarette break after completing the installation in the first of several rooms he has to do. Finding them missing from his pocket he begins searching, only to notice a small lump in his recently completed carpet-installation. Not wanting to rip up all that work for a lousy pack of cigarettes he simply walks over and pounds the lump flat. He decides to forgo the break continues on to the other rooms to be carpeted.

At the end of the day he's completed his work and loading his tools into his trucks when two events occur almost simultaneously: he spies his pack of cigarettes on the dashboard of the truck, and the lady of the house calls out "Have you seen my parakeet?"

A man was stranded on a desert island for 10 years. One day a beautiful girl swims to shore in a wetsuit....
Man: "Hi! Am I ever happy to see you."
Girl: "Hi! It seems like you've been here a long time. How long has it been since you've had a cigarette?"

Man: "It's been ten years!" The girl unzips a slot on the arm of her wet suit and gives the man a cigarette.

Man: "Oh thank you so much!"

Girl: "So tell me how long its been since you had a drink?"

Man: "It's been ten years" The girl unzips a little longer zipper on her wet suit and brings out a flask of whiskey and gives the man a drink.

Man: "Oh... thank you so much. You are like a miracle!"

Girl: [Starting to unzip the front of her wet suit.] "So tell me then, how long has it been since you played around?"

Man: "Oh, my God, don't tell me you've got a set of golf clubs in there too?!"

Smoke, Smoke That Cigarette
Written by Merle Travis and Tex Williams

Now I'm a fellow with a heart of gold
with the ways of a gentleman I've been told
A kind of a guy that wouldn't even harm a flea
But if me and a certain character met
that guy that invented the cigarette
I'd murder that son of a gun in the first degree
It ain't cause I don't smoke myself and I don't reckon they'll injure your health
I've smoked 'em all my life and I ain't dead yet
But nicotine slaves are all the same
at a petting party or a poker game
Everythin's gotta stop when they have that cigarette

(chorus)
Smoke smoke smoke that cigarette puff puff puff and if you smoke yourself to death
Tell St Peter at the Golden Gate that you hate to make him wait
But you just gotta have another cigarette

Now at a game of chance the other night
ol' Dame Fortune wasn't doin' me right
Them kings and queens just kept on comin' round
Well I got a full and I bet it high
but my bluff didn't work on a certain guy
He just kept a raisin' and a layin' that money down
Now he'd raise me and I'd raise him
I sweated blood I had to sink or swim
He finally called and then didn't raise the bet
I said ace's full pal how 'bout you?
He said I'll tell you in a minute or two
But I just gotta have another cigarette

chorus

Now the other night I had a date
with the cutest gal in the fifty states
A highbred uptown social of a date
She said she loved me and it seemed to me
that things were like they oughta be
And hand in hand we strolled down Lover's Lane
She was oh so far from a chunk of ice
and our smoochin' party was a goin' real nice
So help me Hannah I think I'd've been there yet
But I give her a hug and a little squeeze
and she said Jim excuse me please
But I just gotta have another cigarette

(Chorus)

Ha ha just thought I'd see if you were paying attention.

A knight is sworn to valor
His heart knows only virtue
His sword defends the helpless
His might upholds the weak

His wroth undoes the wicked

No you aren't seeing double. I put my blog intro up in this post as a reminder to me. You see I have been wanting to stop smoking cigarettes and it hasn't happened. I've been a steady smoker for thirty years because I have a way of conning myself sometimes and "I" keep talking "me" into one more pack.
It's time to use stragedy (I know that's misspelled It's a Bugs Bunny line). I need to use my greatest strengths to fight my greatest weaknesses.
One of my strengths is I don't lie and more importantly, I never break a promise. That's why I won't generally make one.

So here it is: I promise that the last day of 2007 will be the last day I smoke a cigarette.

Now click send and I'm free!!
So if I don't post or comment in a couple of days understand that I am probably a little too tense. If I don't post or comment in a week it's probably 'cause I'm crawling my walls. (fortunately I have low ceilings ) If I don't post in two weeks, I may be locked in a padded room.

The New Year is a time for reflection for many. Alas, I have seen since my return that many of the people I enjoyed interacting with are gone. There are many new faces on FF tho, and I look forward to meeting more of you.
One of the great things about reading people's blogs is that it is sort of an auto biography. A way to learn about you and your unique perspective on life. So many interesting people, so little time to go back through their posts....

So I thought I'd try to establish a trend. I'm gonna post a sticky with links to the posts I've made that I feel define me as a person. It would be cool if you would consider doing this as well. As a shortcut, you could practice by posting your links on this blog??? I know, I know. More homework.

Auld Lang Syne. Another year is nearly over and Santa didn't bring me the first thing on my list again. Would it be so hard to stuff ten million dollars in a Knight's sock? I put up a big one....

New Years, a time for reflection it tis, and hope for the future.
And hopefully a time to wipe the slate clean and let bygones be bygones. Since my return I have been surfing the blogs here and seen a few posts that have been a tad disturbing. Animosity towards others seems to be present in small pockets and misunderstandings aplenty. Perhaps everyone here can let that all go with the passing of a troublesome year.

Joan is doing ok but still has some problems. I told her that I asked for your prayers and healing thoughts and how terrific you have been. She asked me to pass on her gratitude and her love to you all.

You may have noticed that I have avoided the topic of BlogStock since I've been back. There seemed to have been a few technical problems such as the best date for everyone. I would still love to pull it off and I believe we still can.
If you leave a comment on this post, will you please submit a date that you might be able to come to Colorful Colorado? Preferably in late Spring or early Summer? Not sure what kind of "do" I could come up with but I can be a very creative and inventive fellow and might surprise ya. Besides the fellowship is what's important.

Jolan true, my Romulan brothers and sisters. Although we have been instructed to remain discreet, I believe it is safe to communicate here. These humans are all occupied with a holiday devoted to peace and good will towards each other. Amusing is it not?

The intolerance on this planet is extremely encouraging. Their DNA is exactly the same from individual to individual but many of them still remain adamant that they are superior to others because they appear differently physically. Indeed even when such physical bias is not evident, many still believe it is prevalent and directed towards them personally.
This paranoia makes them ripe to be conquered and enslaved. Even in situations where they have the same appearance, eye structure, skin pigmentation etcetera, they bicker and often become violent with each other over their cultural, religious, or political beliefs.
On a personal note, I find it amazing that they find prejudicial remarks as acceptable when used in a humorous context. Indeed among different groups they even refer to themselves by epithets they would find insulting coming from others outside of their perceived social grouping.

The appalling things they do to animals on this world and the suicidal treatment of their environment I have addressed in numerous reports to the home world and I am confident all of you have read my communiques. It is intriguing that although they are aware of the damage they are doing to their ecosystem, they continue to do so at an accelerated rate.

Of course they have the technology to repel our invasion and the courage and intelligence to withstand us but it would take all of them working together to do so and I am confident this will never happen. In truth, I feel we should accelerate our itinerary before they destroy this world completely and negate years of research and planning.

I found this amusing....

How many humans does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

If it takes more then one they will always be in the dark.

I've been putting together a CD slideshow of my family history in photos to give to my family for Christmas. What a feeling of nostalgia to look at hundreds of photos of kin from as far back as 1895.
My Grandfather was great at taking and collecting photos of everything and everybody. He even published a book about the history of Rocky Ford Colorado, the town I was born in.

The pic I post with this blog is my father and mother holding their newborn baby Knight. The look on their faces is priceless. Heh. Im afraid I evoked a few different looks from them over time, especially during my teen years.

Since our blogs are viewed under several urls and many will eventually read this as it bounce around cyberspace, I want to say...

Trust me on this. Don't let your heritage get away. Take photos of your special moments and mark them. In twenty, thirty, or forty years, someone will be delighted that you did. Maybe even you.

You know Zula, something tells me we may be in Kansas now.

What a wind yesterday. Wind gusts around sixty miles an hour. Sustained winds of forty plus.
Checking the yard to make sure it's still there and still in Colorado. Hmmm there's a bunch of little guys out on the walk singing...

We represent the Lollipop Guild, The Lollipop Guild, The Lollipop Guild

And in the name of the Lollipop Guild,

We wish to welcome you to Muchkinland.

I sure hope there isn't a witch under the house.

Actually, that brings up a point about Camelot. My Camelot, not that grumpy King Arthur's.
We had a nasty hail storm last year in Pueblo. Roofers are still working sunrise to sunset seven days a week to fix the mess. Seems like nearly everyone had damage. Except me.
Five years ago a monster hail storm that put last years to shame, destroyed roofs, broke windows and took out trees all over town.

Except in Camelot. No damage at all except for my poor elms who took a bit of a beating protecting my house but remained standing.

My point is, there is something magical about my home. It is a power center of some kind, if that makes any sense. My old wooden fence is held up by imagination, bailing wire and duct tape but that hellacious wind last night did nothing to it.
When I was a boy, yes I was a boy once , a lonnnnng time ago, We had a lot of ethnic unrest in Pueblo. A lot of violence. It was ugly for many years. My house, the same one I'm living in now, is right in the middle of a poor Hispanic neighborhood.
The neighborhood kids hated me 'cause I am white. The white kids at school hated me 'cause I lived in a poor Hispanic neighborhood. I was a skinny little guy then and spent a lot of my youth running home from school pursued by various factions. But the second I reached my driveway, I turned and became a wolverine. No one messed with me here.

Camelot has been very good to me for a long time. According to conventional wisdom, Camelot isn't worth much monetarily. To me it's priceless and amazing.

This sounds nuts but A couple of years ago I decided to make a pie combining a few of my favorite flavors. It's delicious, it's simple and it's fast.

Chocolate, banana, coconut cream pie

The Whipped Cream Topping

1 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla

Whip cream until almost stiff. Add sugar and vanilla; beat until cream holds peaks. Spread over top of cooled pie or use as a dessert or shortcake topping.

I use a graham cracker crust. Thinly slice a banana and cut the slices in half. Have some flaky shredded coconut ready.
Mix a box of chocolate instant pudding and pie filling according to the instructions on the box. Pour into the pie shell and scatter the banana slices into the pudding. Cover liberally with the coconut and chill in the refrigerator. In a few minutes it will be ready for the cream topping. Very tasty.

Signs You Bought a Bad Christmas Tree

Two feet tall, forty feet wide

Salesman's opening line: "You're not a cop, are you?"

It looks suspiciously like a broom handle with a lot of coat hangers

While you sleep, it gets liquored up and takes the family Caravan for a joy ride.

Each branch has "Duraflame" printed on it.

Keeps heckling your lame top ten list

It's very small and says "air freshener" on it.

Rabbis have better Christmas trees than yours.

Constantly bragging about its "trunk size"

Silver Bells

Silver bells, silver bells
it's Christmas time in the city
ring-a-ling, hear them ring
soon it will be Christmas day!

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks
dressed in holiday style
in the air there's a feeling of Christmas!

Children laughing, people passing
meeting smile after smile
and on every street corner you'll hear . . .

Silver bells ( silver bells! ) silver bells
( silver bells! )
it's Christmas time in the city
ring-a-ling ( ring-a-ling! ) hear them ring
( hear them ring!! )
soon it will be Christmas day!

Strings of street lights, even stop lights
blink of bright red an' green
as the shoppers rush home with their treasures!

Hear the snow crunch, see the kids bunch
this is Santa's big scene
and above all this bustle you'll hear . . .

Silver bells ( silver bells! ) silver bells
( silver bells! )
it's Christmas time in the city
ring-a-ling ( ring-a-ling! ) hear them ring
( hear them ring!! )
soon it will be Christmas day!

Silver bells ( silver bells! ) silver bells
( silver bells! )
it's Christmas time in the city
ring-a-ling ( ring-a-ling! ) hear them ring
( hear them ring!! )
soon . . . to fade

Merry Christmas! Dec 21, 2007 2:33 pm
Mood: Festive, 912 Views
It's the weekend before Christmas
And 'round Camelot
The royal fuzzies are panting
And shedding a lot

With visions of leftovers
They follow me 'round
After turning to yellow
The white snow on the ground

I'm cooking in armor
Dyed red and green
The most festive knight
That you've ever seen

Making some cookies
To leave for St. Nick
I'm trying to make up
For the oops of o'six

Santa had to chase down his sleigh
Pursued down the street
By three barking dogs
Nipping at Reindeer feet

Now the fuzzies are waiting
The ornery pups
To again bark at Santa
Should he have the bells to show up

The neighbors are laughing
As they hear me exclaim
You dogs go lay down
You make me insane

Dundee stop barking
Zula get off the bed
Calista stop licking
I should have kitties instead

Don't get me wrong
I love my doggies a lot
But it's sure getting old
Finding coal in my sock!
................................

Merry Christmas everyone!!

A great post by msalchemy [post 80155] and the passing of one of my favorite singer/songwriters made me think of my Father and this Dan Fogelberg song. I always wanted to play it for Dad but I never did. When it's my time to cross over I will.

Thanks Cat, thanks Dan and most of all,
Thanks Dad. I miss you.

The Leader Of The Band

An only child
Alone and wild
A cabinet maker's son
His hands were meant
For different work
And his heart was known
To none --
He left his home
And went his lone
And solitary way
And he gave to me
A gift I know I never
can repay

A quiet man of music
Denied a simpler fate
He tried to be a soldier once
But his music wouldn't wait
He earned his love
Through discipline
A thundering, velvet hand
His gentle means of sculpting souls
Took me years to understand.

The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through
My instrument
And his song is in my soul --
My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man
I'm just a living legacy
To the leader of the band.

My brothers' lives were
different
For they heard another call
One went to Chicago
And the other to St. Paul
And I'm in Colorado
When I'm not in some hotel
Living out this life I've chose
And come to know so well.

I thank you for the music
And your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom
When it came my time to go --
I thank you for the kindness
And the times when you got tough
And, papa, I don't think I
Said "I love you" near enough --

The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through
My instrument
And his song is in my soul --
My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man
I'm just a living legacy
To the leader of the band
I am the living legacy
To the leader of the band.

I know that I alluded that I would fill in the details of the months I was away, but those who know me know that I don't like to talk about myself much. Let's just say that for thirty years life had been very predictable (I.E. dull as dishwater) but in the last six months I got caught up on life's challenges a bit. Kept me a little preoccupied and indeed, a little lethargic as well.
I even started to dabble with and become addicted to... to... shudder... computer games. Not the hard stuff mind you but who knows where a thing like video poker would have led eventually.
Frankly, altho I missed so many of you very much, I did not believe I would ever return. Four Ladies stayed in touch with me and kept the embers of my attraction to FF alive. But there was one who kept fanning those embers. One who epitimizes this place for me. She is the very ideal of what I deem a "good person" and the description of friend and I owe her so I won't embarass her by saying who she is.

I have made the hardest step now. The first one. The truth is, I need you guys. You inspire and teach me. You entertain and enlighten me. My reference to a solitary Knight in my first post upon returning was not just for literary effect.

I have always been quite an introvert. This trait was okay when I was married as Joan was there to act as liason between society and myself. But as a single Knight... uh man, I need to be a part of that society and interact with it. My skills along that line had grown rusty. FriendFinder honed them again. Sharpened my blade, so to speak.

I strongly believe it was an act of Providence that led me to FF fourteen months ago. This place, you, are just what I need. A community of good people from around the world. People with different beliefs and ideals existing in peace. That's what it's all about.
I often say that I don't believe in coincidence. What ever led all of us to this blog and enticed us to stay did not happen by accident.

We were meant to find each other.

Yeesh, was that boring or what? How about a couple of arrrgh jokes?

An elephant was drinking out of a river one day, when he spotted a turtle asleep on a log. So, he ambled on over and kicked it clear across the river.

"What did you do that for?" Asked a passing giraffe.

"Because I recognized it as the same turtle that took a nip out of my trunk 53 years ago."

"Wow, what a memory" commented the giraffe.

"Yes," said the elephant, "turtle recall".
........................

Two fishermen were out on the lake when one of them dropped his wallet. As they watched the wallet float down to the depths of the lake, a carp came along and snatched up the wallet. Soon came another carp who stole it away from the first.
This caused one fisherman to remark, "That's the first time I've ever seen carp-to-carp walleting."
...................................

As migration approached, two elderly vultures doubted they could make the trip south, so they decided to go by airplane.

When they checked their baggage, the attendant noticed that they were carrying two dead raccoons. "Do you wish to check the raccoons through as luggage?" she asked.

"No, thanks," replied the vultures. "They're carrion."

And a lyric...

Back Home Again
John Denver

There's a storm across the valley, clouds are rolling in
The afternoon is heavy on your shoulders
There's a truck out on the four lane, a mile or more away
The whining of his wheels just makes it colder

He's an hour away from riding on your prayers up in the sky
And ten days on the road are barely gone
There's a fire softly burning, supper's on the stove
But it's the light in your eyes that makes him warm

Hey it's good to be back home again
Sometimes this old farm feels like a long-lost friend
Yes and hey it's good to be back home again

There's all the news to tell him, how'd you spend your time
What's the latest thing the neighbors say
And your mother called last friday, sunshine made her cry
You felt the baby move just yesterday

Hey it's good to be back home again, yes it is
Sometimes this old farm feels like a long-lost friend
Yes and hey it's good to be back home again

Oh the time that I can lay this tired old body down
Feel your fingers feather soft upon me
The kisses that I live for, the love that lights my way
The happiness that that living with you brings me

It's the sweetest thing I know of, just spending time with you
It's the little things that make a house a home
Like a fire softly burning supper on the stove
The light in your eyes that makes me warm

Hey it's good to be back home again
Sometimes this old farm feels like a long-lost friend
Yes and hey it's good to be back home again

Hey it's good to be back home again
Sometimes this old farm feels like a long-lost friend
Hey, it's good to be back home again
I said hey it's good to be back home again

Words and music by John Denver
