| And the phone finally rang...... |
May 20, 2008 6:57 am 460 Views | Sitting on the edge of my seat Friday waiting for that nice young lady to call back like she said she would, I was biting my beautiful set of new acrylic nails (complete with nail art). THe morning passed, but I said, 'not a problem, people get busy'. Still no call by 3 p.m. Then about 3:45 the phone rang and of course I jumped for it, but it wasn't her. It was a local office for a temp agency I had worked for while living in Maine. Would I, could I be interested in a job that just about everyone had turned down. Well, tell me about it........
First thing was: It's kind of dirty. Ok, a machine shop for a pump manufacturing company. Was I afraid of didrt or dust. Ummmm, no. Dirt, grease and oil made up the first 8 years of my work history as an aircraft mechanic. I kind of like the smell of grease and packing bearings was kind of a treat for me.
Second thing: It's an all-male environment. Would I have a problem with that. No, I haven't been scared of boys since I clobbered Russell Brown in the second grade. But I often wonder if Russell is still scared of girls now. I feel real bad about that. Really.
Third thing: It's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out in an industrial area (or to say, it's in a BAD part of town.) Right next to the railroad tracks but not on the RIGHT side of those tracks.
So far it's still sounding okay to my unemployed ears.
Fourth thing: It's $12.50 an hour and they are really looking for a permanent employee, not a temp.
I showed my bright shiney butt there at 7:15 (I am terminally early for everything and didn't have to be there till 8.)
All went well. I had the back logged stacks cleared before lunch. DId NOT know what to do with a full hour for lunch but I did my best. Only answered the phone with the incorrect name of the company once, but I am sure the Company Manager will get a kick out of that - in time. Got tongue tied once. Answered the phone with (Blankety Blank) Cump Pompany. Other than that, not one dismissable event. Got along very well with the men around the office and the one lady that is there was really a sweetheart to me and she was able to hobknob with the higher ups around there. I think they are wanting to make her the Exec Sec or something like that. Good for her!!!!!
The day went very very well and as I was leaving at 5:00 she told me what we would be doing in the morning. She would start me on taking orders, inputing orders, and familiarizing me with all the technical things I'll have to deal with on the phone. TOld me it was a really good day and she was thrilled I was there.
I left at 5:00, got home about 5:27 (not bad at all for a 28 mile drive!!!) Saw the message light blinking on my phone and thought to myself, 'Oh NOW that nice young lady is calling back!"
I played the message and it was from the manager of the agency that sent me over. He told me how positive the feedback from (Blankeyt Blank) Pump Company was, and that they loved me, but I don't need to report for work today. Or Wednesday.......
