how does it go?

"always remember
you're unique.....
just like everybody else"

oh, please

try being unique
really different
I mean

wear your pants on your head
sleep under your bed
sing out loud in the street
talk to everyone you meet
be like Juan Mann, make just one "unique" stand

and see who comes to call

(it won't be your friends)

it'll be the forces of law
and the forces of order

and the uniforms, batons
and handcuffs

of the new
world
order

"always remember,

There's so much right there: the forced insistence that we're ALL unique, perhaps to discourage us from trying so hard to be so.

It's best to shine secretly. Only our friends even care how unique we are. Until or unless our brilliance radiates outward on its own, without being pushed.

sing out loud in the street

Oh I do this. Yep, even when sober. But I need a friend around...for a bit of courage. Come on I would just look insane if I sang with no one around.

Am I still unique? lol

great poem.

Being unique does not necessarily mean how you should behave. It is what we are. Nothing can take it away, as it has been long internalized.

That's the thing about standing out from the crowd, we don't like to do it alone.

Of course you're unique. There can't be two of you, surely?

To be truly unique
don't wear jewelry
or ink on your skin
don't talk to strangers
or have abnormal kin.
Wear really plain tee-shirts
no slogans at all
walk around baggy
(but not with your pants about to fall).

Being unique means being different, being different means being an individual. For individuality to have any meaning it must be allowed to be expressed. Everyone should be free to express their individuality in any way that does not infringe on the liberties of others. Without this right society becomes a faceless mass at the mercy of authoritarian (and not so authoritarian) regimes.

Juan Mann started the free hugs campaign in Sydney, Australia. He simply offered free hugs in the street to anyone who wanted them. The police tried to stop him. He had to collect 10,000 signatures before he was allowed to continue. Why? Because what he was doing didn't fit with what the forces of law and order saw as being "normal".

This is just a small example. Even the most liberal government will quietly chip away at the rights of the individual, especially if those rights are not being exercised.

We owe certain obligations to society via the state, of course. But the state owes us the right to freedom of expression.

I once saw the free hug campaign organized by some Chinese college students on TV here, but didn't know that the activity was initiated by Juan Mann. So I watched the clip accompanied by the song of "All the Same", and was almost touched to tears when the first old lady opened her arms to him. Am full of awe to his bravery and courage.

Sorry for my ignorance.

The notion of liberty is always relative. The expressing of being unique sometimes may only be fulfilled at the sacrifice of one's own life and blood. We have too many such examples. *sign*

Y Fronts (for those who never watched Are You Being Served), aka Whitey Tighties, briefs, jockeys:

"In Britain the term "jockeys" has not caught on, and briefs are often referred to as "Y-fronts". The term derives from the inverted Y-shape formed by the seams at the front of the underpants which allows easy access to the penis for urination, etc. The colloquialism is used even when the fly opening may differ in style, and not actually form the shape of the inverted letter "Y" fly on Cooper Jockey brand briefs."

How much fun it is to educate.

I half agree. I believe that it is possible to be unique - look at Bjork, Damien Hirst and Francis Bacon for example. The key is to be unique without offending others. Eccentric and interesting is fine. Eccentric and anti-social and offensive can get you in trouble in any historical time or place, in my opinion.

I don't think there's anything wrong in being found offensive. But that's the key point. I don't agree with setting out to offend an individual or a group. But if, by what you say or do (without hurt or injury to the defenceless), you offend society's sensibilities, then I don't see any problem with that. It probably means that society was getting a little too conservative and staid anyway.

I think there were enough caveats there.

Once you have lived through a generation, you realize the "normalcy" (I have no other word) of being unique.

Offending others, oddly enough, does not end up being relevant. It is simply a by-product of being who you are (e.g., we are all offensive in some way).

What is relevant is being historical; i.e., commenting accurately on what's going on around you.

((and loving all the i.e.s, e.g.s and other alphabetical anomalies))

Gower, by the way, tends to effectively engender such conversations.

And Kitty LOVES being in the parlor!

I love to effectively engender.

God.

I can only think....how are dealing with the onslaught?????

Screw engendering, ies, egs, and all the rest of it.

It was fun, but now I have my knickers in a knot.

What in HELL did I get myself into???

(You didn't do it; I did.)

It's not so much what you got yourself into, as how you're going to get out of your knickers.

Hang on, that sounds wrong.

If I were Jake, I'd no doubt be saying "Gow, me wee lad..."

But I, being myself, have only the times when I get too grandiose for my own underwear.

Me knickers are still on. I am happy to report that they were never out of my possession.

Here's hoping that your school year is winding down and you are finding some time to loose your Inner Y-Fronts as you cruise the unbelievable beauty of a Mediterranean summer.

Family beats sun, any day of the week.
