we’d known each other for a long time we were friends
after a fashion
I could pour my heart out to him and he’d listen and nod and offer sound advice
together we’d put the world to rights so many times
we’d laughed at the senselessness at the heart of existence
we’d cursed at the fickleness in the hearts of men
we’d loved and hated a thousand women a thousand times over
then yesterday he said you drink too much
I said you’d know you’re the barman.

Awww, I thought that was really sweet, having such a good friend
Funny how people who pretend to care, get paid for doing so

hey it's just like J's Bar in Murakami
I thought it was a common expression! maybe americans like to append 'whore' to too many things. on second thought, maybe the camwhores deserve another chance--some may camwhore by nature, while others may be forced to do so to compete

In the old days,LOL..when i went to Art College,i worked as a barmaid at night to help my finances. Was great fun. Some blokes used to come in the pub before it got busy simply to talk to you.I did not say flirt,i said talk, .Talking to the person behind behind the bar seemed to be quite therapeutic, your kind of anonymous, bit like FF

He obviously cares about you very much to even say so. What a joy to have a friend for so much of your life. I don't have any friends going back that far...we moved too often. The memories you share...are priceless...and will continue to tie you together..beyond this remark.
If nothing else...consider his love.
Feel the passion, walk in peace, live in love....Ari

Ahh, barmen who say they are your best friend Gowerboy, but still let you pay for your drinks.....even when they think you drink too much. A real friend would refuge to give you a drink....or give you one without you paying for it. Next time invite me to that bar and we can get into an argument with him....and maybe get free drinks.....ok now I´m getting selfish. Great poem Gowerboy!!!!!!

I hadn't thought about that, but it's a nice comparison.
Could be an Americanism...I liked the sound of it. I'm sure some people take to camwhoring like ducks to water.

Good comparison with internet. You're right, it is the anonymity to an extent, and later, a kind of false intimacy.

Gets to the point where you don't even have to say the words. The drinks just appear as if by magic.

If nothing else...consider his love.
When the owner of the bar tells you he thinks you're drinking too much, it's normally time to slow down a little at least.
His love? I'll...um...consider it.

To be fair, he does own the bar so it is his livelihood, but he still gives the occasional free drink or (more dangerously) lets you keep a tab.
