I think the idea is to make your enemy's enemy into a friend before that entity attacks you. But if they both attack you, you gain the advantage — because they could never present a united front against you. ~ B. Stay thirsty, my friends.

The adage, "Your enemy's enemy is your friend," is a suggestion that you befriend that entity, so that YOU have the two-against-one advantage. At least that's how I read it. But if you lose the initiative, you still can take advantage of the fact that both attackers hate each other. It's like 'divide and conquer,' except the dividing has already been done for you.
