I frequently recognize old melodies used on supposedly new songs on the radio. I believe that it is not intentional plagarism but subconcious copying. One hip-hop song I heard had copied the melody from the old TV comedy "Gilligan's Island". More recently, another song I heard has copied the melody from the children's song "Are You Sleeping" (Translated from French) Have you noticed any familiar melodies?

The song "LOL Smiley Face" has the same melody as "Are You Sleeping" at the beginning. I can not remember which song uses the melody from Gilligan's Island". Some songs are re-mixes of older melodies but they generally give credits and even copy some of the lyrics to let the listener know that it is a remix.

I believe that after 20 years or so, the song loses the right to be exclusive.
But yes, have noticed it with other songs as well, as Mozart's Guten Abend Gute Nacht ... heard that quite frequently recently. But doubt that they are infringing on the rights of the composer

Copyrights are good for 70 years. US Patents are good for 20 years. I think "Gilligan's Island" has another 20 or 30 years to go under its copyright protection (unless the artist got permission from the original composer).

Don't most artists give permission even before the 20 or 30 years? After all, they do get royalties (read $$$) for each exposure, yes?

That's the traditions of today's Music buzz...They copy the beats songs from yesterday that made Hit songs...That ways, they too get to be in the Top charts... I have heard so many old songs, remixed, modernized!!..It is hard to tell which ones at this moment..
It is the truth in man that sets him free..

When you listen the 1977's music of "Star Wars", you can recognize parts of the overture of Puccini's Opera "Manon Lescaut"...
