Reading James-Sir_T's blog about using first names.
How do you view using someones first name (real name)?
When is it ok to use someones real name?
When is it wrong to use someones real name?
Is there a 'blog etiquette' rule I don't know about regarding this?
I remember this topic being blogged waaaaaay back along time ago but can't remember what the answers were or who blogged it.

I usually use someone's first name only when that person has shown it's ok for other bloggers to use it. My name's pretty well known in this blog community as well, so I'm fine with that, too. Some people prefer privacy, and I respect their choice. It's really on a case to case basis, and the bottom line is to get a feel for what the blogger wants. When in doubt, ask first before using, just to avoid any complications.
I'm dyslexic. I scream Ho Dog instead of Oh God in the throes of passion.

I would never use their name on the blogs if they didn't. In fact, I've known someone here for over year and have not shared their name on the blogs.

I figure if someone posts a blog and signs their name, then it ok to use it...I frequently sign my name, so if someone else uses it, why would I be upset?
But, some people are sensative about it.

I prefer to use their handle as what they did.

It's rude to use someone's first name if they have not used it first with you. On the blog and not in private email or messages. It's OK if they sign off using their first name as that shows they want everyone to know it. Well, that's my take on it anyway.
Sign WHF or occasionally WTF

I think each one of us has a choice here, which I like to respect. The handle is the rule, so I use it preferably. Some may prefer their own names, then they will tell (like Sir_T James). I actually like his handle very much

I've used yours a couple of times...when addressing you...
now that I think of it...without asking...woops sorry
But usually I call someone by their handle.
I can't remember who, but recently someone called me by my first name in my post and I didn't even know they knew my name!
oh well, it's no biggie. To me anyways.

I've used my name enough in here not to worry about anyone else using it. Although if I didn't know them, or hadn't commented on their blog I would find it strange if they used my name.
I still believe in the handle as a first preference tho. Just my view.

A long time ago I put up a blog with the same question.
The answers varied. Some guard their name with a passion. Others are quite open and don't mind if we use their name instead of the handle. James was one of the first who used my name openly ... or did I do that after we emailed each other
I used my name in my 'signature' here for quite a long time. So all the Bloggers I frequently visit know my name. If they use it is a different question. A few do, and others might have forgotten.
I think that if someone openly displays his/her name here for all to see, everyone who frequents their blog can use the name instead of the handle.

I remember when Renee posted a similar question. I find it fascinating that the responses are still pretty much the same. Everyone has their own opinion of what is "rude". I consider using a person's first name as a friendly gesture but then I was never one to stand on formality. As I wrote, I tried to use my first name as a handle but it was taken. At the time I didn't feel comfortable using my last name. I didn't much care for the idea of just adding a number behind James as I wanted to be unique. Sir_T came about after much deliberation. (I gotta get a life ), and I like it. When some call me Sir such as my friend Beta, I get a kick out of it. cause I know she is my friend. Occasionally I will get a response where it seems to be used formally and there isn't a formal bone in my body.
Enjoy the ride. All you take with you when you leave is the experience.

I'm a little reluctant about using another member's first name unless it's already displayed or already established as being that person's first name by his or her own choice. --- Have a good day.
 Solo.
