Body language...personal space.
Sweetnsassygurl 5/3/2008 9:03 pm
We all have our personal space around us...hmmm maybe 3-4 feet. Thats OUR space! Some people choose to cross that line and intrude on our personal space. We react accordingly to the person or the vibe we get from them.

Some people come into our space (or I like to call it my bubble) and we become defensive. We take a step back, cross our arms, move our chair away, lean away or get up and walk away. Some people don't see these body language signs, or choose to ignore them.

Other people who we are comfortable with will step across that invisible line into our space and we don't mind. They are welcome there and our body language will display this. Our body language might include, open arms (not crossed), smiling, leaning toward the person, touching, eye contact, and being attentive.

Having discussed body language in the blogs before, some people do not believe in it. We all have our opinions and are entitled to them.

Over the past few years body language has fascinated me. I watch people, observe all the little messages that they send off and don't even realize it.

I think if we became more aware of body language there would be less 'guessing' involved in what others are thinking. Especially regarding dating, and friendships. Just a thought.

Ok there ya have it, my Sweetnsassy ramble for today!

Hope you are enjoying your weekend!

Some people don't believe in body language?
heh heh. One of my bosses had a tear in his esophagus (I used spell check and that still doesn't look right) ok, the lining of his throat, due to stress and most likely cause he drinks like crazy. Anyway... his doctor told him to make an imaginary box around himself. And if anybody tried to bring stress into his life he should tell them to stay outta his box.

I am a people watcher too, kid. Musta got it from my Grandmother. She used to badger us to take her to the shopping center and when we went into the store she wanted to just wait in the car and watch the people. She thought it was better then tv.

Enjoy the ride. All you take with you when you leave is the experience.

Ummm I think I will pass on asking people to stay outta my box!

People watching in my neighborhood is far more entertaining than the best action movie on t.v.! (I live in the center of what I call 'crack town'...'harley town' and right by a bar!) I see it ALL!

I don't know why because I have never really had a bad experience with a stranger getting into my space, but I get really uncomfortable when someone is too close to me. Even sometimes my close friends, I just get really ansy and have to tell them to back off for a bit, I dunno...it's weird. When someone even accidently bumps me in the mall or something, I jump like I've been shocked.

I wish I could change that, I have no reason to be so uneased. You should see me on the skytrain on a busy day, lol, I keep my head down and don't make eyecontact, I'm a weirdo.

I think that's why when a homeless person asks me for spare change I give it to them, just to make them go away, lol horrible huh?

Lol, I can picture you throwing coins at homeless people and running away. Gotta go my mommy is calling me!

I don't think its odd to not want people in your space even close friends. We just have moments when we want our space.

I have one person that always sits close to me...in my space. My reaction is always push my chair away, cross my leg so my foot is facing away, lean against the opposite arm of the chair and my arms cross instantly. These things happen without giving it thought. Now if that isn't body language....what is?? One day I just know the arm on the chair will snap and I will go azz over tea kettle and land on my head!

I think you would have plenty to study about the body language in Finnish culture. Most people of other cultures complain heavily about the lack of that in here. In a certain way they are right

It is the lack of that form of communication that is not available in this medium, that can lead to misunderstangs here.

Thank you Beta and Uni for your replies. It is easier to have misunderstanding over the net as there is no body language.
