1,000 divorce cases filed every month in the twin cities of Hyderabad-Secunderabad, AP, India

Believe it or not, around 1,000 divorce petitions are filed in the in the family courts of the Hyderabad-Ranga Reddy districts. Hyderabad and Secunderabad are twin cities separated by a lake called Hussain Sagar, with Tank Bund being a popular name to it for locals. It is the combined capital for residuery state of Andhra Pradesh and that of Telangana, in South India. This city is known for many things like the traditional Nawab muslim culture, with muslims predominating in the old city area near Charminar, the iconic structure of the city, Golconda Fort, Ramoji Film City that is of international standards like Hollywood, Salar Jung Museum, Birla Mandir, Gandipet etc, not to be forgotten the gastronomic food like Hyderabad dum biriyani like the one from Paradise hotel, then of course the pearls, It a known IT hub of India, after Benguluru; with many MNCs having their offices in it; besides too many out sourcing companies related to IT and medical transcription.

Of late, the marital conflicts leading to divorces have been growing to leaps and bounds in this city; with a recent study putting the figure at about 1,000 divorce petitions filed in the family courts of Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts that form the core of the capital city. Recently a faculty member of a reputed instituted killed himself after brutally killing his two over a marital discard with his wife working for an IT firm that in fact stirred a survey. The study finds an alarming increase by 60% of divorce cases filed in just one state of Telangana over the last one year.Couples from middle class back ground and those working in soft ware industry are way ahead in breaking relationships in comparison to those from poorer sections. A whooping 40 % of these cases have come from employees of the IT industry. It is higher in couples with both of them working and having different work schedules.

Work pressure and modern day life styles have drastically reduced the personal space of family and creating a psychological gap between couples. On an average, it is taking about 6 months to get a final judgment in case of mutually consented petitions where as it may take even up to 4 years if one of the partners has a different mind. Delay in courts is driving some to suicides are some lose jobs because they need to frequent courts by taking leave or on loss of pay, with a divorce petition leading to financial and psychological issues. Providing counselling in right time to an extent can resolve issues but there is a dearth for professional counselors.

If we look at global scenario, a UN study of 2011 puts Latvia, Czeck Republic,Lithuania, Hungary and Sweden among the top ten in highest divorce rates, with being at 10th position and Libya, Georgia, Mangolia, Armenia, Chile being in the top ten with lowest rates.

Coming to India, New Delhi is rated as the divorce capital of India; with Benguluru and Hyderabad closely following it. Nuclear families and empowerment to an extent have turned a bane.

Will there be any reprieve?
