India working on "Visa on Arrival" for US tourists : Sources.


Sources say that India is seriously considering "Visa on arrival" VoA) facility to US citizens, who intends to visit India for tourism or meeting with friends/relatives, with a maximum stay of 30 days. India started VoA in 2010, which was limited to 5 countries in the beginning, which later was extended to make the list to 11. Later it was officially rumored that some GCC countries like The Sultanate of Oman will come under this category though orders to that effect are still awaited.

During Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi's 5 day official visit to US that starts on September 26, 2014; an announcement to this effect is expected to be made, as known from the Ministries of External affairs and Tourism making out broad plans ready. A huge euphoria prevails here in US, with Modi expected to address diaspora on May 28 at NYC. US President Barack Obama is hosting a dinner in the honour of the Indian PM on September 29, which not usual; while US Vice-President hosting a working lunch to Modi on September 30, before he flies out.

The bilateral relationships between the two countries are so cool and a low, after the former Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade's issue and this visit of Modi is being expected to go beyond repairing a flagging relatinship; with great of renewing ties on all strategic fronts like economics, WTO, visas to IT professionals, trade, defence, education, human resources, tourism, culture, nuclear technology, science & technology, health care etc. The bilateral trade between India and US goes beyomd $150 billion annually, of which software accounts to $100 billions; with US giving 60% of it. Merchandise imports and exports touch $62 billion. Given these indicators; industry leaders and Assocham is having high hopes on Modi's visit to help boost this trade turn over. With Obama delaring that India is 'one of the defining partners of 21st century'; Gateway, India's foreign policy think tank hopes to take the Indo-US partnership to $1 trillion by 2030. US Secretary Check Hagel, who visited India recently reiterated that US gives top priority to defence ties with India, with emphasis on developing Javelin antitank missile as revealed by The Defence & Trade Initiative (DTT. The US-India Business Council (USIBC) that has top 310 US companies in it's hold sees an opportunity to take trade to $500 billions and it eager to here Modi where it hosts Modi on September 30 at the historic Andrew Mellon Auditorium. Times Square in NYC is all set to go to giant screens to watch Modi live. Significantly, US Senate has unanimously resolved to observe September 30 when Modi visits White House as Indis- US Partnership Day.

But Modi may say a polite no to the US proposal of India being a partner with West on combating Islamic terrorist state for reasons obvious. .

Modi will be arriving at New York late 26th September late afternoon and stays at New York Palace Hotel. Manhattan. Next day he visits Ground Zero of World Trade Centre that was the victim of 9/11 attacks, followed by a visit 9/11 Memorial Museum to pay homage to the victims of 2001 attacks. Later he will proceed to UN General Assembly to address it, followed by having bilateral talks with his Bangladesh counter part. In the evening, he will visit the central park to address the Global Citizen festival.

Significantly, he will be staying in the Blair House, on the Pennsylvania street of Washington the official guest house of US President. After Vajpayee, he is the nest indian PM to stay there.
