India's growing number of Billionaires and sinking academic excellence.

A 2014 report on the Global billionaires and Institutions of Academic Excellence shows that while the Indian billionaires are amassing more and more creating a further economic divide between haves and havenots; the academic excellence in the institutions of higher learning is sinking in comparison.

The Wealth-X and UBS global survey report of billionaires says that there are 2325 billionaires in the world, holding among them $7,291billions; with US topping the list with 571bllionaires; India is no less, with 100 such holding $175 billions, standing at global tally ranking of 6. Surprisingly Mumbai city hosts 28 of these 100 Indians; while the University of Mumbai being a billionaire with $12. Another striking feature is that the India's top 5 billionaires hold half of the India's billionaire's wealth. It tells a lot on the economic divide that cleaves the poor and rich; with poorer sections are either stagnating or turning more poor; rich are swelling with more riches.

If this is the case; the academic excellence among the India's institutions of excellence and higher learning is sinking as seen from the 2014 report Qs Global annual rankings of world's top universities. Most glaringly India does not stand any where in the list of top 200; with IIT, Delhi which was in this list for 10 years consequetively drifted to 235 rank; which IIT-Bombay stood at 222. Among the top 50 of Asia; National University of Singapore was on the top; with just 3 Indian institutions in it. US ranked high with 51 institutions among the top 200, with MIT leading as Number 1 with Cambridge, Imperial and Harward followed by; ; UK has 29 and Germany has 13. Despite hiking budgetary allocations to education and research; with separate Ministry for HRD carved out; this sort of dismal picture causes utter disappointment.

I am sure Narendra Modi lead Government will address this issue seriously and try to take corrective steps.
