Make Cricket more exciting ??

In our childhood days , Cricket was called a game of Gentlemen. We were taught all copy book defense techniques and no one told us to hit a ball hard or loft it. The scoring of runs was with wrist play, cuts, square cuts, off drive and on drive and straight drive etc. A bouncer was to be hooked and most of the shots were to be " all along the ground".

A Batsman was a Batsman, a bowler was a bowler, wicket keeper did his job. Very few all rounders. Maharaja Ranjit Singh never fielded and only batted; a substitute would field for him. There were very few Test Match Series. Each Test match lasted for six days with one rest day and 5 days of game and inspite of that many matches ended in a draw . The entire nation was glued to Radios and Transistors to listen to the running commentary

Gradually, the game changed drastically after Kerry Packer made it a one day game but with 60 overs each.and then came a One day format which was accepted by all Cricket Boards and finally World Cup Tournaments started. The game was initially of 60 overs . The rules of the game were fixed such that they were to benefit the Batsman and encouraged great scores.

The game is gradually witnessing many changes. The One Day game became 50 - 50 overs, Day and night matches began. Electronic evolution completely changed the game. We have game coverage by multiple cameras, action replays , cameras mounted in the stumps, snicko meter and what not. The coverage has become so elaborate that even if a player picks his nose, a close up can be shown .

The emphasis is on high scores and thrill in last overs in evenly matched teams

The game has further undergone a major change and T 20 series is started. The quality of fielding is par excellent. The number of people coming to stadium has increased drastically. The game has no longer remained a gentleman's game. Cricket has been turned into a great money making racket.

In addition to the Two Umpires on the Field, there is a Third Umpire who with the aid of electronic coverage is able to give precise verdict- OUT or NOT OUT. Now the teams even have an option to refer a field umpire's decision to the Third Umpire for review. .

The rules of the game are in favour of the batsman- any ball on the left is wide, a free hit for every no ball, no LBW for ball piched on the left, and pundits will list many such new rules. The objective is , clearly, to encourage hugh scores and this tempts now the Batsmen to loft the ball trying to reach across the fence for either a 4 or a 6. In the bargain, they are also getting caught by the fielders. A successful catch drives the crowds into a frenzy.

To the Cricketing rule makers I have these two suggestions:

1. In order to encourage the Batsman to loft the ball in the air, a singe bounce ball crossing the boundary fence should get him 5 runs instead of current 4, while a direct hit across the boundary will continue to be a 6. This would tempt the Batsmen to loft the ball in air and make the game more thrilling.

2.Just like cameras mounted on the stumps, both the field Umpires' Hats should have a Camera mounted. This will first show what the Umpire precisely saw on the field. The current cameras aiding the Third Umpire are mounted far away and at considerable height. Their usage to further aid the third Umpire should continue.

Continue the game in its current format
