Second Day at Amritsar

Well hope you all enjoyed the visit to the Golden Temple at Amritsar. The city of Amritsar is in Northern India and very close to Indo-Pak Border. The two historically famous cities Amritsar in India and Lahore are just a few Kms apart but with the border between.

The first location we are going to visit is Jalianwala Bagh, a public garden in Amritsar in the Punjab state of India, and houses a memorial of national importance, established in 1951 to commemorate the massacre by British occupying forces of peaceful celebrators including unarmed women and , on the occasion of the Punjabi New Year on April 13, 1919 in the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. Colonial British Raj sources identified 379 fatalities and estimated about 1100 wounded. Civil Surgeon Dr. Smith indicated that there were 1,526 casualties. The true figures of fatalities are unknown, but are likely to be many times higher than the official figure of 379.

A grim reminder of what happened is itched on a marble slab at the entrance says it all. Tears roll out reading the incidence. It is reported the British Genral Dyer blocked the entrance to this Garden and his sodiers opened fire on unarmed crowd of between 15000 to 20000.

The memorial has still retained the brick walls with Bullet marks.

.
Having spent the morning at Jalianwala Bagh, we next move to Wagah Border which is 32 kms from Amritsar and 24 Kms from Lahore.

A ceremony takes place every evening before sunset at the Wagah border, which as part of the Grand Trunk Road was the only road link between these two countries before the opening of the Aman Setu in Kashmir in 1999. The ceremony starts with a blustering parade by the soldiers from both the sides, and ends up in the perfectly coordinated lowering of the two nations' flags. It is called the beating retreat border ceremony on the international level. One infantryman stands at attention on each side of the gate. As the sun sets, the iron gates at the border are opened and the two flags are lowered simultaneously. The flags are folded and the ceremony ends with a retreat that involves a brusque handshake between soldiers from either side, followed by the closing of the gates again. The spectacle of the ceremony attracts many visitors from both sides of the border, as well as international tourists.

Recently in November 2014 a sucide bomber of 18 - 20 years exploded a device on Pakistan side of the border immediately after the evening ceremony . The causalities are estimated t o be 60 with 110 injured.

With this visit and grand dinner in Amritsar, I end the Tour of India. Look forward to dear River_view to take us North Eastern territory
