Welcome to Amritsar- Our Fourth Destination

The Fourth destination

What started as a vintage car safari by my dear friend Aloha was kick started with a visit to Needa's Thai Coffee locale where we had excellent ambiance and lovely Heart laced Coffee.

Next destination was Sydney with our Cindrella dressed Shalu. She rushed us back to the airport after a dinner in the exquisite revolving restaurant. The third destination was the city of Jodhpur in India where we all visited the Jodhpur Fort. Next day was a Desert Safari and Camel ride and an overnight stay in tents in the cool ambience of the desert. Our pal Sunny the Bunny spent the night under open sky chatting with my pretty assistant

Now we have traveled to our next destination in Northern India - Amritsar. Welcome to the city of Amritsar.which is very close to Indo- Pak Border with the city of Lahore on the other side

The city of Amritsar was built by the Sikhs in the Sixteenth Century. First a man made lake was built to store 'Amrit" the holy water from which the name- Amrit Sarovar and later called Amritsar.

The Central temple called Harmandir Sahib was then built in the centre of the lake in next Century and is holiest shrine for the Sikhs. Later in the Nineteenth Century , Mahraja Ranjit Singh of Punjab decorated the temple with Gold which completed in early twentieth century and that is how Harmandir Sahib is also called a Golden Temple.

There are many tourist spots in and around Amritsar. We will visit three. Todays visit is to the Golden Temple - a very tranquil place open to all religions, cast , creed and Nationalities. There are some simple do's and donot's. One has to enter the temple without shoes, wash feet before entering, cover head with a cloth as a mark of respect , and no smoking, alcohol is to be consumed inside the temple. Simple , ain't it ?

Here is your tour of the Golden Temple thru my lens...

A Panoramic View of the vast and tranquil expanses of the Golden Temple

.

Front Elevation of the Tample

.
Outer Parikrama ( perimeter)
The Lake Water is fed from River Ravi and is clean and pure. One is surprised to see Gold Fishes as big as 1 1/2 feet in Length

The temple also has a kitchen called as 'Langar' where on an average 2000 visitors and devotees are fed free food. On special days the Langar feeds as many as 100,000 devotees.

.
All that glitters is Pure Gold

'

The temple has four main entrances there by indicating the Sikhs welcome to one and all.. In the temple Sikhs do Free Service called ' Kar Seva'. and all are equals. So don't be surprised if a multi millionaire is collecting your shoes for safe keeping or is mopping the floor.

Friends enjoy the visit. Shall we try the yummy Indian food from the Langar?

Tomorrow we cover visit to Jalianwala Baug and Wagah Border
