Excellence is for self and Quality is for other's satisfaction A few days back I Blogged about Excellence . concluding that Excellence is not for someone else to notice but for your own satisfaction and efficiency.. This inspired Aloha to write another Blog [post 156892] concluding with Putting yourself first doesn’t mean being selfish. ; It means being self aware…” That makes me think about Quality which is for others' satisfaction. I used a word Quality which I have been using very often. Over the work span of nearly 40 years, have tried to improve quality of products, services; arrest quality give aways, read Quality manuals, implemented Quality systems as per ISO 9000, discussed Just in Time and Kaizen. Heard lectures on Sigma six and the list is endless. Never thought about understanding the concept of Quality till a few days back when I was in the Film City and a shooting was going on near by. It was a typical Dhishum Dhishum action scene. The routine scene where the Baddie is thrown out of a large glass pane. Camera, action and the Duplicate stuntman ran and dashed on the glass pane, broke the pane and fell down. Great shot – CUT. It took seconds to realize that the stuntman who just crashed through the glass pane was badly cut & was bleeding profusely although all safety precautions were taken. He was given first aid and rushed to a hospital nearby with some glass pieces still embedded in his flesh. The Stunt Director was shouting, cursing profusely , wanting to know which basterd procured the glass panes. The bloody glass of lousy quality that injured his best stuntman as well as spoiled his reputation as the safest stunt Director in the industry. This got me in a serious thinking mode. What is really meant by Quality? Just a few days back , had seen the Red Fort ceremony of Independence day. The Prime Minister was speaking from behind a thick glass pane. Hmmmm Bullet proof glass. It is supposed to protect person behind from a bullet fired at him even from a close range. So is it that the thickness of glass pane matters ? Not at all, it is the combined effect of thickness, the material, the manufacturing / curing process etc etc. ( Sorry I am not a glass technologist). Aaha so if a bullet really hits that glass and is arrested then Glass is of good quality and if it passes through and hits the man behind , then we get one more National Holiday ( ). The concept and understanding of ‘Quality’ had started taking shape in the mind. In the process of thinking the following examples popped up: 1. A roadside clumsy Kiosk of Sunil – the best 'Wada Pav’ vendor in locality. A primus kerosene stove burning loudly. A big Kadai (frying pan) where the Potato Wada is being deep fried. The big clientele waiting for their turn to get hot hot Wada wrapped in a ‘Pav’ local bun ( Indian Burger) , some dry coconut & red chilly powder chutney . Almost all auto riksha / taxi drivers and passers by stop, have this ' yummy' snack and reinforce Sunil’s reputation as the vendor of best Wada Pav. And his charges are very reasonable. Have I tasted Sunil’s said to be delightful preparation? No way. Oh my God all the oil , must have turned rancid with continued boiling.Must be bloddy some seed cotton oil (Eeks). Oofff there is a stagnant filthy gutter near by. Flies attempting constantly to feast on the bread. Look at the dirty water in the bucket used for multiple washing of plates, the dirty jerry can from which people are drinking water. It is beyond my imagination to eat at Sunil’s eatery and food stuff of that quality. Period. 2. My dad returned from USA / after completing his MS in 1953. He bought a classy Parker 51 Fountain Pen. A golden cap, plunger type ink pump, the Parker nib. He often told me all through his life span that it was the best pen of class and quality. After his demise, I took it and even today after 56- 57 years , the golden cap is shining as good as new, the ink pump works and the nib is matured and seasoned silky smooth. A gentle reminder of my dad and his quest for Quality. Even today I carry that pen when I am attending some crucial business meeting or signing a check of one or more Crore ( 10 million). 3. I often wondered why my tailor instructed me to buy 20 cms extra cloth if it had stripes or checks. One day I asked him the reason and he then explained to me that a real good quality shirt is the one where the stripes match various cuts and stitching or the checks merge beautifully blended into each other. To achieve this, he said extra cloth is required to cut the various parts properly such that the quality shirt results. For a plain shirt , cutting layouts are optimal. Since then even when buying a ready made shirt , I check if the stripes match over the shoulder or the back. To me now , it is one of the checks for Good Quality shirt. The glass pane crash and the severely wounded stuntman , the bullet proof glass with Prime Minister behind it and with all the above thoughts , an understanding of Quality dawned on me: Quality is the capability to meet one's expectations . If it meets your requirements / expectations or is more than it then the Quality is acceptable/ excellent . The requirements / expectations vary from person to person. Sunil’s Batata Wada is of best quality for thousands but unpalatable for me. Me thinks that this understanding of Quality is extend able to almost all aspects of life say like Service, Products, Movies, even humour. Some go to the extent of wanting to spend Quality time together. Wonder what are the expectations from the other. We tend to associate Quality with Price. Is it so really? Can Love be measured by any parameter of Quality. Is there good quality love or is it that after separation the quality of love between the two was bad. Aakash. quality speaks for itself and needs no second opinion. it is not necessary that the expensive articles will definitely be of quality one. LOVE IS ALWAYS BEAUTIFUL
