Announce your own death- a Superstition

Kawlya Cha Laabh

Since our childhood, we all have heard of many superstitions like a Cat crossing your path announcing that you are gonna fail in your that days plans. Remedy is to stop and wait for someone else to be the first to cross the Cats's path, hurry/ even honk so that the Cat is scared and doesn't cross your road or walk 10 paces backwards and then proceed further . There are many such superstitions. At times, we believed also in these superstitions and many still beilieve.

Friends I don't know how many of you are aware of this superstition & belief in Eastern Maharashtra ( Vidarbha ). Well I have experienced it in my childhood.

It is believed that if one sees a Crow couple copulating then the person is doomed to die soon. The remedy is to announce your own death and the more your close relatives and friends cry and mourn, you are freed of the curse and you live a long life.

In Marathy it is called " Kawlya cha Laabh"

This happened in late fifties. At Nagpur , my uncle while cycling to his office in the morning happened to see a Crow one on top of another trying to get into position and precariously balancing himself with fluttering wings. Knowing about and believing in the Superstition, he panicked. He gathered his friends in the office and they hatched a remedy plan.

Two of his best friends came home with watery eyes and sobbing and announced that uncle, on the way to the office, was knocked down by a speeding truck and was in Mayo Hospital and was in serious condition and in bad shape. Usually this kind of news is standard first News to the family announcing death .' Jor ka zataka dheer se ?

The entire family broke down. I remember my mom and recently married aunt started crying. My aunt was hysterical and almost broke down .Hearing the commotion in our house, the neighbors also gathered and ladies started sobbing & offering condolences and support. My dad had already left for his office. There were no telephones in those days. Some one went to get cycle rickshaws to take us to hospital.

After about 10-15 minutes, after getting thoroughly convinced that the family has cried and suffered enough, the friends disclosed the fact. Uncle had taken leave that day and was waiting near by. He came home in minutes and all were relieved. There were jubilations, laughter and happiness all over the house and neighborhood .

This uncle of mine, still at Nagpur , is 87, active and three years back fell down from scooter , broke a few bones , had head injury and a brain surgery. He believed that at 84 he could still ride the two wheeler safely.

I spoke to him today and he remembered the episode & we laughed it out. He told me that its probably that incident that has given him long and healthy life. All his elder and younger brothers ( 4 in numbers) are no more ." Believe it or not ." he said

By the way in all my life I have never seen crows copulating. Outside my home, there is lots and lots of greenery and a dense population of crows and many other birds. All these 40 plus years I have seen many birds like sparrows, mainahs, parrots , pigeons in compromising positions , but never the crows. Indeed surprising huh?

Well if you happen to witness the crow romance, you now know the remedial action.
