Mom I miss you

MOM I MISS YOU.

On this day, June 15, 1986 , I was in Indore with my brother; 14 years younger; who had just finished his Engineering and we both were at Ujjain/ Indore. After a tiring day,we both had a few drinks a lovely dinner in the hotel and retired for the day. Around midnight the room phone woke us up and we got a shattering news that our mom was no more. She had a massive heart attack and breathed her last in the lap of my sister. She was only 58 then. Fortunately both her daughters were with her by coincidence but both her sons were away. She had died in our home at Pune.

The only way to travel quickly to Pune was to travel by road. We booked a taxi at the Railway Station and embarked on the long journey. The rains had set in , but our driver was good and he drove very cautiously. Those days the roads were narrow and slippery with heavy traffic. The entire journey was very quite, the brothers didn't speak a word; but entire life's video was being played and replayed. We could reach Pune only by 4. 30 PM the next day after almost a non stop journey of 14-15 hours.

Outside our bungalow there was a crowd of around 100 relatives and well wishers.standing in light drizzle. In the drawing room, the lady was sleeping very peacefully on slabs of ice arranged for the long wait for her sons. She was frozen stiff. Within 5 minutes we took her to the crematorium for the last rites.

Today after 28 years, all this is itched permanently in my memory. A very brave and kind hearted lady. She had guts to undertake travel alone , to join my father who was studying there, to America in 1953 leaving me, all of 4 , behind in safe hands. Those days overseas travel was only by boats / cruise liners and took weeks.

She knows that not a single day has passed when I have not remembered her. Sometimes while scrubbing dry after a bath, when she would clean ears, dry the head completely or sometimes while tieing shoe laces. Mom I know you are Happy where ever you are and you will be missed till my last day.

Here is a nice picture on Mother.
