Waiting on the Rain

An invisible red thread connects those destined to meet, despite the time, the place, and despite the circumstances. The thread can be tightened or tangled, but will never be broken.
~ ChineseProverb

The sky above was just beginning to darken as a cold February wind blew in from the North. Desolate and unforgiving its icy breath swept across the open plains of Sierra Ridge. From out of nowhere it arrived – casting a veil of mystery over the dull, frozen landscape – screaming to be heard until the long dead grass of winter bowed before its fury and the skeletal trees swayed in time to its macabre waltz. The promise of rain was a tangible undercurrent flowing somewhere beneath the surface of that wind – dark and foreboding – the perfect messenger to herald the impending arrival of the phantom horses.

Kat couldn’t help but shiver as the cold, eerie darkness crept closer, threatening once more to engulf her. Her mind began to awaken, expanding to acknowledge the unseen forces that were even now gathering strength around her. Expanding until she could sense the approaching storm as though it were alive .. a living, breathing thing with a dark intelligence. A palpable force bent upon unspeakable evil and single minded destruction.

Crouched silently in the shelter of a small stand of fragrant pines, Kat shivered .. watching as her breath escaped into the winter air in small frosty plumes. With each minute that passed she could feel the knot in her stomach grow tighter and she scolded herself once again for being foolish enough to come to this god-forsaken place alone.

Had it just been her naturally insatiable sense of curiosity, Kat may have thought twice about embarking on such a crazy and dangerous journey .. perhaps coming to her senses long before she let herself freeze to death in the icy grip of a winter storm. But Kat knew it was far more than just passing fancy that had brought her to Sierra Ridge. Ever since the night she had danced at Ricardo’s masquerade ball, Kat’s identity had been torn tantalizingly between one man’s seductive embrace and another’s equally powerful hunger for her immortal soul.

But in the lonely hours when darkness fell, it was the dreams that consumed – devouring her sleep as every night she became a slave to the wicked and selfish passions of her phantom lovers. Tormented beyond all reason, forced to the very brink of her endurance, Kat’s sleep had become almost non-existent. Lost in the cobwebs of her day to day existence, her sanity was beginning to unravel right before her eyes.

And now the dreams had become far too real for comfort. The details she was allowed to remember .. amazingly vivid. It was almost as if she had been given the key to unlock a universe of unlimited potential, opening a door that had at one time been closed to her for so long. And yet somehow Kat feared the very existence of these dreams, locked as they were within the fragile ether of a time once remembered. Brief glimpses of a place where pain soon melted into pleasure, joy eventually succumbed to sorrow, and time was the only thing there was never enough of. It was in this dream-like state that Kat passed her time, living out her fantasies each and every night as if they were as real as the ground beneath her feet – fighting desperately to stop the rising of the sun before it could herald the arrival of yet another dawn.

There were moments when Kat wanted nothing more than to spend eternity lost in this fragile existence .. entangled in the illusory sensations of ecstasy that both men so obviously offered. But at what price? Would she gamble it all away just to lose everything? Or would she remember who’s name fell softly upon her lips in those fleeting seconds before the dreams came and swept her away? Would she recognize her heart’s desire – even as her body surrendered with a reckless abandon, melting with a longing that could never be quenched as the Devil’s kiss set her soul afire?

That nagging sense of doubt grew stronger with each passing minute – but Kat knew that she was about to take a stand. All she could do now was trust in her heart to make the right decision – praying for the vision to see beyond what was obvious .. until she found the one man who’s love could set her free. If the horses were truly the key to her salvation, then she had nothing to lose and almost everything to gain.

Smiling inwardly – Kat began to relax a little, knowing that in a few minutes she would no longer have to spend her nights balancing precariously on the edge of reason – too weak to even resist the temptations that were even now waging war in her tired mind.

Just then (and without any warning).. darkness fell. A frosty moon appeared from behind clouds that had become somehow sombre and menacing .. heavy as they were with the promise of impending snow. The wind shifted to the North and as it did so, something tugged firmly at Kat’s hair before moving swiftly to graze her cheek with a touch that was razor sharp. She held a hand over her mouth, fighting desperately to silence the scream that now threatened to disturb the eerie silence of Sierra Ridge.

An intense fear filled Kat’s eyes as the sound of approaching hooves shook the earth beneath her, unstoppable now as they pressed forward, galloping in time with Kat’s destiny. The doorway was preparing to open - and as it did Kat held her breath, poised and remarkably ready to meet whatever was waiting for her .. on the other side.
