Deep down, we have always known that wiping our rears with dry paper is ineffective; a classic survey showed that half of toilet~paper users spend their days with 'fecal contamination' in their underpants. And yet we continue to mock the bidet, the Frenchest of innovations, as froufrou, risqu'e, de trop. But while personal hygiene is one thing, the future of the planet is another. The average person uses 57 sheets of toilet paper a day;collectively we burn through 36.5 BILLION rolls each year. Tossing all the toilet~paper would save 15 MILLION TREES, 17.3 TERAWATTS OF ELECTRICITY, and more than 473 BILLION GALLONS OF WATER ANNUALLY; the environmental impact on bidets is minimal in comparison. No wonder the Japanese bidet behemoth Toto is gearing up for a massive sales push. When it's hip to be green, ditching the Charmin could actually make a difference. And not only in our(dirty)drawers. . August 24&31, 2009 issue of Newsweek written by Andrew Romano
note; I changed the wording so as not to put the focus on any one country in particular. .

Cute post Nancy!! What will happen to all the tp if we all converted our loos?? You know there are models that were advertised on TV, way back when I used to watch TV, that had some kind of drier in it like a blow drier for your bottom....LOL I wonder how many people bought one???
Take care my friend.

57 Sheets of TP a day! That is obsessive to the point of a national fixation - no wonder we have an economic crisis - no one is working, they are too busy wiping their asses!
Great post.

Hi Nancy
Ahhh but the Japanese bidet is very different from the French. You know, the Japanese like to copy everything, but don't always get it right I still like the French bidet, if only I could convince our government that it is not for my 'personal pleasure'.
If the French would be more marketing orientated, they would promote the bidet in the Middle East where everybody washes and does not waste paper
Cute post

Hey Nancy - I got a question. If one uses a bidet, what does one do with one's wet ass? Does one not dry off? Because I would think that paper would be needed for at least that purpose...I've never used a bidet, so pardon the ignorance.

Thank you for educating me, I had no idea the Japanese bidet is very different from the French, I hate to admit it..but I know very little about bidets beyond this one article (I live in the U.S.). It's about education in saving water, toilet paper, electricity..and..clean underpants Glad you enjoyed the post

You got me, Donna I've never even SEEN a bidet in person.. much less used one! I have always wondered the same thing though I guess we are 'behind' our behinds here in the good ole' U.S. of A.

LOL - oh well, I thought you might know. I've seen a few bidets in houses being built (my ex is a contractor and I've been IN the homes before anyone buys them, and I know that a lot of new homes are being built with them around here). I imagine one would be quite sopping wet after using one! And so, paper towels? It's certainly not sanitary to use cloth and as far as a "blow dry" - that's consuming electricity. There's no real green way to go with this.

ha!ha!ha! Maybe just pull up the underpants after using the bidet and let it dry 'au naturel,' ha!ha!ha! It's interesting to hear that they are becoming more popular in this country though..you're right, there really is no 'green' way here. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this Donna..great minds think alike, huh? I hope your weekend has been real nice, my friend. Take care(((hugs)))Nancy
