Life without friends would be hard. Could you imagine not having a single friend to share things with? I can't. A very special friend called me today from far away. Just that call put an instant smile on my face and reminded me what is to have special people called friends in my life. He reminded me how special they are and how important they are to me.
I am truly blessed to have met some wonderful people over the years. Some have stayed longer than others, and yet we remain friends and stay in contact even through distances and the time that has passed by.
Friends are the people you can't wait to get in trouble with. You laugh, plot and have a good ole time with. They bring you joy, happiness, sorrow, and pain sometimes, but in the end, you can't think of any reason to not be their friend.
But more importantly, they are also the people who call you to make sure you are okay when life is hard. They are the people who make you laugh until your sides hurt. They are the very people who teach you about yourself and the things that matter to you. They share a part of who they are with you and you share with them a part of you.
If you are really lucky they all shave their heads to be bald when you lose your hair to cancer! Or better yet, they get caught skinny dipping with you on girl's night out at 38. Then you all laugh about what would you tell everyone who read the paper about your wet and wild adventure while the police officer is trying to figure out what to do with you - after all we're in a college town, all over 38 and doing something not expected of 38 year old women. By the time the night is over you all go celebrate being let go by getting a tattoo together - now five us have the same dang tattoo on our butts.... ah, life is good!
They are the ones who don't care if you dress up or wear make up. They just want to be with you. They are the people who matter to you and share themselves with you as well.
They are the people who cry with you, laugh with you, play with you, teach you, be there for you, and you be there for them... isn't having special people called friends amazing?
The people I call my friends in life are truly that. They are the people I love unconditionally and share my life with... good parts and bad and, we're still together after all these years.

Nicely-written. I tend to skip over blog entries entitled "Friendship," but I'm glad I didn't skip this one.
I'm reminded of close friends I had when I was younger. It seemed easier to form close friendships then. At least, for me.
Thanks for sharing this.

fastcatkin replies on 6/2/2008 11:41 am: Thank you. I used to have a hard time letting people in as I got older, but it was more because I focused too hard on what other people might think. I really missed out on some good friendships too because of it. Now, I look at the people in my life and I've got friends from all walks of life and we have different views, but we get along great, disagree, but still remain friends.
To get to this point, I had to learn to step out of my comfort zone and speak first sometimes. It was hard, but it worked and sometimes it didn't, but the more I did it, the easier it got and well, the rest is I have great friendships. |

One is lucky to have a good friend... and you have 5. You're one of the luckiest!
