A certain old man relayed to me his story. He was too proud and happy while narrating everything that he accomplished in his 69 years of life. He has a beautiful, smart and very kind wife. They were blessed with four intelligent children who already finished their respective degree courses. They are all successful in their chosen field of endeavor. His eldest son is a doctor. His second is an engineer. The third became a lawyer. And the youngest is managing their family business. He has ten grandchildren, six girls and four boys.

The old man said he had nothing to regret his life. And now he is ready to depart from this world because he had accomplished his goals. He obtained almost everything that a man can desire. In fact, he was recently recognized as an outstanding senior citizen in his town. He is rich and honorable. He said that these things are enough for him and he is ready to die anytime because he believed that he has lived his life to the fullest.

That old man is not alone in this notion. Many people are like him. They think the same. After attaining some levels of fame and prestige, after fulfilling their aspirations in life and after they have realized their dreams for their families they presume that it’s enough.

Biblically speaking, is it true that what he had accomplished in his life is enough? If a person becomes successful in his life on earth, does he get everything that he needs? Has he really lived his life to the fullest?

If we consult the only book that we can rely on in terms of knowing Gods will and plan for human kind, we can say that this belief is incorrect. We were not created by God just to eat, drink and to live luxuriously on earth. We are not here to just exist for a moment then die afterwards, even how successful we maybe in our assessment.

Let us dig deeper into the true meaning of life and our existence on earth. Let us find why we are here. Why did God create us? Why did He give everything that we need? Is it enough that we were born by our loving parents? When we grew up, we studied in school and finished a course of our choice. After we are through with our studies, is it enough that we find our partner in life and have children?

And since we are educated, we are able to get high paying jobs and earn huge amount of money in easy ways. We have practically become rich. We have traveled around the world many times and met famous personalities in the business and political world. We earned the respect of our fellowmen and gained the influence that many people dreamed of. We belong to the elite group in the society. Hence, we have fully enjoyed our life on earth.

But, is that all that we want in life? When death comes, when we are about to face our creator, what will happen to us? Where are we going? In which part of eternity are we heading for? Have we thought of that? Do we consider the fact that death is not the end of man? Are we truly prepared for the future?

Our life on earth is just like vapor. It stays a while, then vanished afterwards. We should always be prepared because we don’t know how long we shall stay here. It is not bad to set up earthy things for our loved ones but we should not forget that there are much more important things than material wealth.

Anybody whose only concern is to eat, or to drink or to be merry is called in the bible as a ‘fool’

The wisest men who lived on earth said in Ecclesiastes 2:24,

“There is nothing better for a man, that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy, good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God”

"The wisest mind has something yet to learn."

a very thought provoking piece Cloudy, only one thing matters to me while im living, and thats how i treat my fellow humans, rich or poor..it doesnt matter, nothing wrong with either, but if you can live with compassion, empathy and understanding, then youve acheived what too many people these days never achieve.
