I deliberately avoided everyone this weekend since I wanted to take a break from all the petty bitching that seems even more rampant than normal.
Yet, someone managed to locate me and called me over the mobile.
She was looking for a team for a big show later in the year and was asking my opinion on the line-up. We were discussing the merits, advantages and synergy between a few combinations of dancers, when this supposedly well-travelled and educated dancer asked,
"We need to make it politically correct. So how about Z? We need a blackie."
My jaw dropped as I tried not to drop my mobile.
There was a deep silence before she asked me what I thought again. And I very icily and curtly told her that she should be careful how she uses her words as it would definitely offend not only Z but a lot of people.
She had the audacity to claim that English was not her first language and she was just trying for some flippant humour that was not meant to be racist.
I just replied that that would seem like a poor excuse to many people. Pleading language barrier and humour in some cases is a cop-out. Malice and poor manners are hard to disguise, whatever language you couch them in.
I ended the conversation very quickly, pleading another call.
I may not like what Z does on a professional basis but no one has the right to attack her on such a personal and unjustifiably bigoted platform.
I also told the poor excuse for a human being on the phone that I was too busy to work with her this year. I did not add, or any other year.
Far from the madding crowd ... is it such a difficult dream?

She needs to make it politically correct, then proceeds to call Z a blackie.
What planet is she from????

I know. I've always harboured doubts about this woman but thought she had more sense than to reveal herself so vilely to me.
I cannot tell you how offended and disgusted I was. Whatever planet she is on, I hope it never comes within my orbit again.

It's difficult to keep ourselves away from madding crowd, because sometimes you need to talk with them before realizing how mad they have been. And when you decide to stay away, you have already been annoyed or even hurt.
Don't let such person bother you, WHF! Those who discriminate others don't really have confidence about who they are themselves!

Anything to get a laugh, especially at the expense of others. If people didn't indulge them, their show would come to a sudden halt.

How true! I usually do not let them bother me but it was almost the fact that as she said it, she seemed to expect me to join in her insanity. That was as insulting as her comment.
Anyway, sigh, gotta go now as my friend is nagging me to get something to eat before boarding. Apparently the food is shite. Ta!

Well, if it possessed even an iota of humour I might have just rolled my eyes and ignored it. But the ignorant self-satisfaction and malice was just too thick that it got to me. Definitely a sideshow which I will not pick up from now on.
Ta, am starting the day early and trying to log on via mobile. Bloody ridiculous.

Racism still exists. Out of earshot. Rarely heard, but still felt. It will continue until enough of us have the guts to stand up to people of our own race.

I can recommend a place in mid-Wales so far from everywhere that mobiles don't work and the only human company you might see is the pilot of an RAF jet flying past at mach 0.8 from time to time. Normally it's so quiet it makes your ears hurt.
I wish I lived nearer on weeks like last week. Dont ask !!!

Bravo WHF, my daughter is of mixed race. She does not look like me at all.I used to call her my little Bird of Paradise .One day as i was disembarking the bus the driver asked me if i was her babysitter.I told him " No ",i was her mother. He looked at me puzzled and shocked and replied that there was also a Lady in the next town who had a mixed child and she was also a nice lady.HHHmh.,im at a point i feel sorry for these people.Their dumbness does not even anger me.The only thing which worries me is when prejudice turns into aggression or inequality.......Now take off to some remote Island in The South Pacific and leave your handy+PC at home ..that should do the trick !!

Well, I am not sure which institutions would actually think it is correct, superficially or otherwise, to call anyone a "blackie". Hmm, maybe the KKK?

How true. I think it is harder, or hardest, when the racism strikes so close to home. I remember the first time I realised my mother was a racist. The feeling of total betrayal and shock put me off my dinner. I never forgot the exact moment when the realisation hit me. And how our relationship took a huge hit when I quietly told her, "Mum, you are a racist."

Which part? I used to go down to Wales on weekends with an ex-colleague, who would take me hiking just to get away from the office. Lovely place.
Ah, serendipity, mate, that you mentioned flying as that was what I did this week. I took off with an old mate and we went to a deserted town and just flew microlights, rode horses and had quiet BBQs every night. Am nice and relaxed and happy now!
Ta! And won't ask.

at the bus driver. Lovely.
I remember you mentioning your diverse family makeup. I can empathise with your daughter. Fortunately, we every ignorant or sanctimonious bigot we get, we also get another pebble of determination set in our personal battle against such behaviour. Helps to be stubborn sometimes.
It was not quite an island nor in the South Pacific but I did take time off and spent with some really old friends. Was a lovely break and I am already missing the peace and quiet! And yes, the infrastructure there was rather limited so I could not use my PC or mobile except for real emergencies. What joy!
Ta chickie!

superficial correctness in my understanding makes her care about including the Z in the team, but doesn't help her on referring to Z as a "blackie", at least not while she is between persons she things understand her way of thinking. In this case, you. I suspect this is one of the things, that may have got you upset, but I might be wrong as well ...

Hey, Beta. Spot on, chickie! That's one of the main reasons why I was so ticked. But also that her political correctness was actually driven by monetary considerations. If she had a more "racially well-rounded" troupe, it will sell more tickets and appeal to wider spectrum of people. It's all about money at the end of the day for some people.
You know what? Today I had a really weird craving. I was so craving quark for some reason. Bizarre! Maybe I was homesick.

I'd never met a person of colour until I came to this country and went to school in Connecticut. My first two fights in 3rd grade were brought about by the cruelty leveled at the only girl in school fitting that description. Throughout my life I've been annoyed and aggrieved by racial or ethnic joke and the response to my response has been that I'm a kill joy and it's all in fun. Now I have a beautiful grandson who is a young man of a diverse racial background African American Cherokee and Irish. I have such hope for his life but I'm continually amazed at how little society has progressed towards tolerance since I was in grade school.

Wow, I am slightly amazed that you had never met a person of colour till you got to Connecticut. I'm sorry but which country were you from? I never read people's profiles ... sorry.
I'm sure your grandson is beautiful with such a fab mix of heritages. I think tolerance is one of the hardest things to achieve and is a continual and constant aim we must set for ourselves.

Quoting gowerboy: You come up against this kind of thing all the time in Spain.
It's a running joke in the market, where I'll have a beer with the butchers of a Saturday afternoon, that I'm on a "civilizing mission". Claims that certain expressions are "just a part of the language" ring false when set beside the reality of the immigrant experience. I won't put up with them.
Even in the university I've heard someone say, "Tengo tanto trabajo que necesito un negro."
My jaw dropped too.
I posted this ages ago, but it was denied due to one Spanish sentence.
