For The Girls Only - Hairstabation

Blokes, you've been warned. This is not the post for you ... unless you are debutanteB, who will probably go into an opiate stupour of pure delight now.

I am going to talk about hair.

Plays Hairspray.

I hate my hair. It is thick, unruly, frizzy, about 60% gray (yes I know ... it is hereditary) and I would lop the whole lot off if I could.

I spend rather a fortune on it to maintain the length which I need for my work and to ensure that it does not all fall off from all the colouring I inflict on it to cover my grays.

I try to use products that I can find in most of the countries I go to but there is one item that I would insist on wherever I go. I even bring it to all the hair salons I patronise as I felt there was no substitute.

It's Keratase Chrome Relax hair masque which was one of the few things which could turn my stubborn locks into silky, soft and fairly unfrazzled tresses. I would always have a couple of the shocking pink jars of hair savers in my bags wherever I travelled. American Express Card would have been envious at how I truly could not leave home without it.

The problem with Keratase Chrome Relax is that it is not easy to find. In many places in Asia, you can only find it in the more exclusive hair salons and many of the retail shops that supposedly sell it are peddling counterfeits. I know as I can smell a fake Chrome Relax the moment the cap is twisted open.

It is also rather expensive considering how quickly I run through it. About US$40 a pop, and it is quite a small pop too. Each jar lasts about 10-15 applications depending on the length and thickness of your hair. Mine is quite long and thick so I am lucky if it lasts 10 washes.

So this time around, I travelled in a real hurry and realised to my dismay that I had left my precious in the last city. It was an emergency. I had a migraine and needed to wash my hair to feel better. But I could not do so without a proper conditioner.

And I generally do not trust hotel shampoos and conditioners.

It was also the wee hours of the morning so I knew I would not be able to get my Keratase Chrome Relax at that ungodly hour.

In desperation I called down to the concierge. I knew they owed me for the fiasco earlier that day so I pulled the beleaguered, hard-done-by -guest act.

"I have such a terrible migraine. It's from the rude awakening and humiliation of the scene this afternoon. I really need to get rid of it."

"Oh dear. We are so sorry. Can we bring up some Panadol for you?"

"No, no. I am allergic to Panadol. And I have already taken some Tylenol but it is not helping. My migraine will probably go away if I wash my hair."

"Oh ... but our hair salon is closed for the day, ma'am. "

I blinked. I really had not expected to go to the hair salon or for them to arrange for a hair dresser at that time of the night. Wow, they must really want to suck up to me.

"Er, that's fine. I can wash my own hair as I do not want to bother anyone. But I did not bring my hair conditioner and my hair is very sensitive. Oh my head ..."

I know I am laying it on thick but hey, it usually works!

"Ma'am, I can try to get your conditioner. You just tell me what it is and I'll go and find it for you. You want tea or something to make you feel better until we find it, ma'am?"

"Tea would be lovely. Chamomile please. And it's Keratase Chrome Relax Hair Masque. If they do not have the masque, I can settle for the conditioner."

I settled back to await their call that they could not find it.

Sure enough, almost 30 minutes passed before they called to report sadly that they could not find it anywhere. But one of the staff had a suggestion. She was coming up to my room to show it to me.

I was puzzled. And intrigued. And still had my migraine.

A young girl came up and introduced herself as Nora. She had a bright orange bottle in her hand. Clairol Herbal Essence Citrus Lift conditioner that apparently has tangerine, lemongrass and aloe vera in it to make the hair radiant and soft. Better yet, it is tailored for dry or coloured hair.

I looked at it dubiously as I have not used Clariol Herbal Essences products since I was a teen. And discovered they dried out my hair even if they smelt heavenly.

Nora was very sweet and earnest, assuring me that her sister is a hair dresser who highly recommends the conditioner. Apparently, I had sent the hotel into a bit of a panic with my request and in desperation, Nora had awoken her sister to ask her for her advise on how to placate me.

Nora's sister staked her reputation that I would not be disappointed in the Citrus Lift and that she would pit it against my beloved Chrome Relax.

Wow, brave, fighting words.

"OK, I'm game. If my hair gets fried, I am going to sue you guys, you do know that?"

Nervous giggle.

So I chased her off and went about washing my migraine away.

I'll tell you this. I think the Clairol Herbal Essence probably costs about US$5? I am not sure as I have not bought any hair products from the pharmacies or retail stores in ages. But I am now going to alternate the Citrus Lift with my Chrome Relax.

Citrus Lift for daily use and Chrome Relax for weekly or bi-weekly treatment.

Bloody hell, I have been spending a fortune on Keratase for years and now I discover an upstart that has overthrown it. Who says you need to pay a king's ransom for the same result?

In fact, I think the Citrus Lift gives my hair a tinge more silkiness than Chrome Relax. It is now my new Holy Grail.

I must thank Nora with a nice hamper before I leave for helping me save a fortune and my hair.

Brilliant stuff. Pleased as punch. And walking out of here like a shampoo ad, swishing my hair all over the place.

I get the frizzies too. Must be the bloody drop of Spanish blood in me veins that prevented me from getting the renowned silky smooth asian tresses. I'm using L'Oreal's Elseve line these days, though, and it's pretty good so far, especially the Smooth Intense Anti-Frizz Mask (used twice a week for me and it does wonders), and not as pricey as Kerastase. Schwarzkopf pretty ok with my hair as well, and I find that they now have the Zero Frizz conditioner out in regular supermarkets---have tried it and yay! It works for me!

OK, who is the next going to the supermarket and getting the products to test on herself? Me of course, as I always do I buy the expensive one only very seldom, but I can't share the experience with you. Our hair is different. |

Sigh, mine's too frizzy for even L'Oreal to work on. And Schwarzkogf is too heavy for my hair. Weighs it down terribly. John Frieda works in the short term but after that the frizzies are back.

Used to be only Keratase worked on my hair but now that I found the Citrus Lift I am buoyant yet calm. LOL.

I am going to study the results for a while to see if it continues to work in the long term.

It's all the Irian Jayan, Portuguese and Turkish blood. Makes for crazy combination for hair.

LOL, I used to be like that. Would test out any new products that came out. But then I realised my hair is very sensitive and I had to be careful with it. But I love nice smelling shampoos and conditioners. Sometimes I find myself buying them just for the smell and if it does not work on my hair, I used them to clean my makeup brushes!

so you too can be seen at the shops testing the smell of products? I don't see anybody else doing it here, I thought I was the only one

I confess I could pay more for a conditioner/shampoo, which could avoid the hair getting the static electricity. I really hate that during the winter. The hair gluing on the face or up like I'd have seen a ghost.

I occasionally make my own shampoo (I must make some more)
I prefer it to any shop brought ones and my hair is much softer after using my own.

It also gives my Daughters hair the loveliest shine.

My hair is stubborn, as it never turns soft or silky,no matter what shampoo and conditioner I use. The only time it went smooth was when I had it straightened years ago. It took my hairdresser more than 4 hours to carefully straighten every lock of my curly hair, and he almost cried whole time during that process, complaining that my hair was so thick that it used up two times of the amount of the chemical liquid than average customers, that while he could only charge me with the same price. Although the hair felt pleasant to hands after that, I found it lost its usual dynamic character. So I never dare to try that again.

Was that you in the pic, WHF? How long and shiny the hair is!

LOL, yes I do.

Oh, I know about the static electricity thing. A stylist told me to use dryer sheets on the hair ... looking around for MM and Heavenstouch now ... as that will take away the static electricity. But just cannot see myself walking around carrying dryer sheets.

I have the finger-stuck-in-electrical-socket hair when I just wash it before I punish it with loads of products to get it to stay down.

Sounds like mine .. until I got Keratase and my latest Holy Grail.

I straightened my hair almost a decade ago and it pretty much destroyed my hair. Was straight but became incredibly dry and lifeless after that. Never again.

You have curly hair? Mine is in between wavy and straight, if that makes sense. I once had a hair salon tell me they were shut for the day after they saw how much hair I had. It was 3pm. Usually I have it in a chignon so you do not really know how long it is till I let it down.

Yes, that's me. I've cut my hair since then as it was getting too uncontrollable. It's now to the waist instead of to the buttocks. Er, it's the flash in the camera that made my hair look shiny. Actually it was incredibly tangled that night. I had a hell of a time detangling and brushing it out that night.

But for your migraine, may I suggest you try giovanni's shampoo next time. It really helps my migraine. Just stand under the hot shower for some time to relax all the neck muscles and blood vessels. Then use that very refreshing Tee Tree Triple Treat shampoo ... ahhh .... all the tension disappears

Ah, we have Sasa in Hong Kong but I do not think I have seen this Giovanni Shampoo.

Anyway, it is not the shampoo or conditioner that gets rid of the migraine for me but the actual hair washing process. I think it is all the massaging of the scalp and strands of hair that helps alleviate the migraine.

And I really do not use any shampoo indiscriminately as my hair is very sensitive. Trying out the Clairol was actually an extreme act of desperation carried out only because I was having such a bad migraine.

I've seen the Tea Tree Triple Treat Shampoo before but it is too harsh on my hair when we tested a couple of locks with it. Sigh. Ta though!

Thanks so much! I love Thailand and would love to retire there when I finally hang up my shoes for good. Karp khun kha (I know I spelt that wrong ... sorry).

Ah, the ole Paul Mitchell. I used to use those when I was a teen because they were sponsors but realised that they leave too much build-up for me.

You lucky thing.

Dear " What's her face ",

The best thing for migraine headaches is a good Chiropractic treatment. The second best thing would be me washing your hair for you.

" ... hang up your shoes ... " ???

Ah, thanks but no thanks. Not particularly fond of chiropractors and while I like having my hair washed by other people, I also rather like them being professionally trained to so so!

Yes ... what about my shoes?

I am totally in love with all the Bumble and Bumble products. Especially the curl creams, but I think your problem is different from mine.

Way to save! I told you your karma was good!

I rather like Bumble & Bumble products too but they do not really work on me.

Er, not too good actually as yesterday I got caught having to spend time and speak with someone I truly despise.
