This would make sense to those who speak Chinese.
I was at a do and someone's mobile rang. Since this was Taiwan, it was a notification that she had mail in Mandarin. Announced by some prissy sounding bloke with a mainland Chinese twang. It went like this ...
Fei Ge Chuan Shu
With my uncertain Chinese, developed mostly off the back of Chinese kungfu comics and movies, I asked her,
"Whose brother is flying on a book and why?"
Because I reckoned Fei = Fly, Ge = Brother, Chuan = Boat or Ship, and Shu = Book.
Everyone fell about laughing hysterically and there were even some suicidal types who attempted to pinch my cheeks and pat my head, cooing at how cute I was.
When I threatened to kill everyone in sight, they said it meant "You've Got Mail", and had nothing to do with a brother flying on a book delivering kungpao chicken.
Bugger.
OK, been very busy and pissed off by stooopid people so I have missed many posts and some of you here.
MM, cannot wait to meet with Paul and ye ... I soooo need a break. Lost weight again. Bloody pissed off about it. Need to put it back on by pigging out. Also have a performance on 1 May night now but you are welcomed to come with me if you are not bored or we can meet for late supper after my show. Gotta go. Chat when I see ye and damn funny joke. Trust Roxie. LOL.

(((((((((((((Xiao Po)))))))))))))))))---gow's been wondering if you've been arrested or something. Told him most likely you'd be bailing someone out, because you're too bloody devious to get caught.
Brother flying on book does sound like a karate move, come to think of it.
Nicobate!!!

Ta, mate. Well, I seem to be the sort that invites comments and reactions normally not associated with chicks. I think it's because I am kinda ... not chick-like yet girly. Not sure how to explain it. Anyway, am trying to take care of me but it's a bit hectic right now. Might try to convince MM & hubby to take me with them when they leave ...

So so so nice to see you back WHF, have been always wondering where you are.
Your understanding of Fei Gei Chuan Shu sounds so much like Aladinn's sitting on that flying carpet
Fei---fly Ge---pigeon Chuan---send(vt here) Shu---mails and letters(in Ancient Chinese language, the character shu indicates letters, while the meaning of book is very lately derived )
Ancient Chinese domesticated pigeon and use them to send messages. They kept the bird in point A, and took it to point B to feed it. After a while the bird would get into the habbit of flying between the two places and so remember the route. The pigeon trained specially for sending messages often has a small sealed container attached to one of it's legs, so that when they work, people will stuff the well-folded letter in the container.
Fei Ge Chuan Shu is similar to Hong Yan Chuan Shu(Hong---large Yan---wild goose Chuan---send Shu---mails and letters)
Those who teased you with the word are Bu Hou Dao, way too cunning Take care

Hiya Agnes! Awww, I miss you too ... LOL. Especially when they were bullying me and speaking in Chinese all the time so they could gossip about me!
Hey, I do not have middle eastern blood for nothing. Me and carpets ... don't get me started.
I know the pigeon delivery system. Seen it many times in kungfu dramas. Always wondered why the enemies did not just shoot the pigeons so the messages do not reach their destination. Or better yet, catch the pigeon and plant false messages so you can sabotage the enemy and crush them in one flight, so to speak.
Never knew that's how they taught the pigeons. Interesting.
What does Bu Hou Dao mean? Bu = Not, what is hou? and Dao = way/manner? I think they were more like bu shi peng you!
Oh, the Taiwanese speak a different type of Chinese, don't they? Always find myself having to think harder to interpret what they say.

Hou--(Kuan Hou) tolerate and clement; Dao---1.way(dao lu) (original meaning, and you were right in guessing), 2.(dao li)reason,3.(dao de)morality. Both the latter two meanings of Dao are extended. Hou Dao describes a tolerate and benign attitude that can reflect a person's high morality and his decent demeanor. Today any behaviors that may involve cheating, cunning, exaggerating or distorting can be described as Bu Hou Dao. In your case, those friends who tried to make fun of your command of mandarin might be still out of not-a-so-bad intention. Therefore, it was in a humorous way that I said "bu hou dao" in commenting them. Dear WHF, if you feel insulted by their attitude, then you may take Bu Hou Dao as Bu Shi Peng You in that context.
Next time when any Chinese people ventures to poke fun at your mandarin, tell them that Zuo Ren Yao Hou Dao(If you want to be a good and decent people, you should be hou dao). That's a very humourous and popular saying among online Chinese forums nowadays.
The dialect most Taiwanese speak is Min Nan Hua, whose intonation and pronunciation to some extent exerts certain influence on many Taiwanese' mandarin. You will find very similar phenomenon on the mainland of China, especially among old people. Therefore you can always easily tell from which part of China a person may have come from if he/she speaks dialect-affected mandarin. I think that is a common linguistic feature all over the world
Have a wonderful weekend
