Pssst, Miss, Can I See Ya Nekkid?

Remember when you were a and strange blokes (and some women too) would come up to you, hand over name cards and ask if you wanted to be a model? Your folks would warn you of such con men and pervs who would use this line on any and every young ?

It always surprises me how these purveyors of flesh would still try that tack even today. What possesses people to even believe these kind of shite? Low self esteem? Inflated ego? Delusions of grandeur? Non-existent IQ? Irrepressible vanity? What?

I bloody detest the chancers who always ask you to pose for this and that. It just makes me want to kick them where the sun doesn't shine and future offsprings would only ever be a glint in their eye. But because this usually happens in polite society, I have to restrain myself and just smile and use my verbal arsenal instead.

"Ah, WHF, *insert smarmy fake flattery here* ... would you pose for me please? I love painting the beauty of the nekkid body."

"Ah, I understand. So obviously you could not rely on your own body then."

*Resist ... resist ... resist urge to tear his tongue from face with iron-hot tongs ...*

"Miss WHF, I would so love to see your body in motion. Can I take pictures of you dancing with no clothes for my new exhibition?"

"Sure, so long as you do it with no eyes as well."

*Still resisting ...*

"I write erotic poetry and I would love to have you dance as I recite some of them at my next reading."

"Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will revolt me."

*Barf*

And so on ...

What on God's green earth makes them think I will allow them anywhere near me even if I was swathed in Sherpa garb with a hundred vicious Rottweilers around me?

A young lady I am mildly acquainted with regaled us with the tale of how she had just been approached by a talent scout to be a model for a swimwear show. Perusing his card and hearing her recount of the encounter, we were highly dubious. But she would hear nothing of it and in turn accused her aunt of being an old biddy (this woman used to be a top model before she got married and retired) who is jealous of her youth.

The mind boggles. We could only smile and keep our counsel while her aunt made up her mind to tell the young lady's mother.

Strangely, I do not have as much of a problem posing for a good artist whose work, philosophy, attitude and talent I believe in. Which I have done on occasions. Perhaps as an artist myself I can understand and empathise with the journey they are taking. Even then it has to be artistic and tasteful rather than gratuitous and in-your-face.

But photographs and videos and such do not sit well with me. It's certainly not because I regard the art in these less than traditional visual art. Perhaps it's because these media have been so manipulated and twisted for deviant and dubious purposes, a la the recent Edison Chen debacle.

So how many of you would actually agree to pose naked for a photo or art exhibition?

Well, Whatsherface, I'm really impressed how you handled those shitheads. Sorry for the language, purveyors of flesh you said. I have known quite a few friends like that & I'm not proud of them either. Most of the time, they make me sick. But there are people still believe these kind of bullshit.

One thing puzzle me though, you said that as an artist yourself you understand and empathise with the journey of those models & you do not have as much of a problem posing for a good artist whose work, philosophy, attitude and talent you believe in. Which, I quote, you have done on occasions, but it has to be artistic and tasteful rather than gratuitous and in-your-face.

So my questions from me are how many times have you posed naked for a photo or art exhibition? And what is your definition of artistic and tasteful?

As you can see from the above, all the ladies do not agree to pose naked for a photo or art exhibition. But I'm very curious to know your answers to my questions. It's not everyday I have a chance to talk to an artist who is willing to pose naked for a photo or art exhibition as long as it is artistic and tasteful.

Just speaking out my mind.

I tried to pose naked for one of my profile photos but ff would not approve it until I cropped it and put on my watch and my ring.

As an art student in school, you are required to model for your seniors. So when you are a senior you can get models from the juniors ... otherwise you get nadda.

Furthermore, anatomy is compulsory in figure drawing and you have to do nudes as part of your development. The best models for figure drawing are old people because they are visually more interesting and excites the artists with the possibilities and treatment of the subject. When we got young and pretty models, we would groan as it would be like doing a fashion illustration instead of figure drawing. Even if we chose young models, we would want something different, unusual, soulful, with inner dialogue that you can mould with your hands into a piece of art.

And anyway, I was a model so I was pretty used to posing for long hours etc ... music was essential. As for artistically nude posing, yes I did it but I had the right to decide if, for whom and how it went. Also, as an artist, I could identify when the artist painting me as I can immediately understand the angles, composition, concept, lighting etc and bring it. My definition of artistic is nothing overt. The implied speaks more than the overt and gratuitous because in all the shouting, you miss the beauty and substance.

Good on ya. Nothing irks an artist more than an unwilling model.

Why do pervs always pick on kids? Most people find it hard to believe but I was a bit of a tomboy growing up despite all the dance, deportment & other "ladylike" classes I had to take. I certainly never thought of myself as some kind of troll magnet.

Then I turned 12 and something bizarre happened to my body. I still remember the day I realised that things had changed. During a visit to my grandfather, I borrowed a pair of skinny white jeans from my aunt and wearing a peasant top, went to the library. Yes, i was also a nerd besides a tomboy who rather spend time in the library.

Crossing the road, I realised that some cars had stopped and were honking at me. At first I thought I might have left my fly undone or something. Then they started wolf-whistling and shouting comments to me that would get them arrested in every states known to decent man.

It was the first time I realised what female power was. It scared the hell out of me and I remember going home crying, wondering if I had done something wrong. After that I kept getting harassed like that with "model this ... model that" bollocks. It drove me barmy. Finally, my grand-aunt decided that I should model but at least with her as my agent and her company took care of me. So i was always very protected and did not really have to suffer through the stuff I saw some of the other girls go through. Also, because my first focus was dance, modelling did not have much impact on me.

But I really really felt sorry for the girls (and guys) who had to suffer through it alone and at our young age. The first time I had to so a swimsuit shoot, you should have seen how the men in my family turned up. My grand-da even brought some of the dogs along and stood right outside the studio with his cane. Bless.

Hi WHF, it's nice to see your reply. But before I go further, let me wish you Gong Xi Fa Cai, Si Si Shun Li, Xing Xian Si Chen, Fu Xing Gao Zao.

I guess you must be pretty busy during this CNY holidays, a lot of friends & families to visit. I hope you have a wonderful time with them as I am with mine.

You said you were an art student & were required to model for your seniors. I was told by my friend in Nanyang that school always hired models for figure drawing, never students. Which school is this anyway? Nanyang or LaSalle or some school overseas? Sorry, if I sound a bit agitated, because one of my niece is planning to go into an art school next year & she is a very shy girl. She is like a daughter to me & I don't want her to go into something unprepared.

To tell you the truth, I was nearly an art student myself. As a teenager, I'm only good at two things; drawing & computer. However, my family was poor & I didn't take me a long time to consider my future. A few years ago, I got laid off due to the Asia Financial crisis & during that 'free time', I tried to go back to art again. But after doing some drawings, I looked at my finished artwork, I can see that the passion is not there anymore. So I stopped drawing & destroyed all my artworks. I knew then that's the end of art for me.

By the way, I read your reply to Allwoman4ever4U, something puzzled me. You said the first time you went to a swimsuit shoot, the men in your family turned up & your grand-da even brought some of the dogs along and stood right outside the studio with his cane. They seem very protective to you.

What was their reaction when they knew about what you did in art school & all that nude posings for artwork? Or are they still in the dark? If they knew about it & support your decision, what change their attitude? Lastly, you said you are a dancer, were you doing dancing & drawing classes at the same time in art school? If it is, then it must be very tough for you.

Take care.

Dome

Firstly, Dome, let me put this clearly. I am not Singaporean nor am I born there. I happened to be in Singapore when I wrote this profile so please stop assuming.

Secondly, I am not Chinese so I do not celebrate Chinese New Year except to visit people for a free meal during that period.

Thirdly, I did go to school in Singapore but that was when I was eight and I left in 6 months. So, no I did not study in Lasalle or Nanyang.

Lastly, I come from a family of artists and chefs. And we are not Asian so we do not have the small-minded bias as you listed. And posing nude during figure drawing is not sleazy as you seem to imply in your subtle comments. And for your information, my family would never think in that way of insular, ethnocentric and bigoted way. Even the most racist of them still have some common sense.

I am very well rounded and those were only some of the things I undertook i school. We were expected to excel in almost everything and to experience as much as we could and not close our minds and make silly assumptions.

Sorry for the wrong assumption. I hope I did not offend you in anyway.
End of discussion then.
