Here's a change for ya.

All that belly-aching about no job? Well, I've been sitting mum on something for a while. Two weeks ago today I went for a job interview hoping beyond hope I could walk out with a part-time customer service position if nothing else. It's a big chain home improvement store that is opening down the street within walking distance.

When I got the call for an interview I was almost on the verge of a nervous breakdown, but I think if anyone was reading my blog you already had a clue. I went the next day to a basic cattle call type of interview, but I made it through the 'fill in the bubble' questionaire, the rapid fire 'answer the first thing that comes to mind' question session on the computer, then I have the face to face interview with a skinny little guy who after we get through it all tells me, I'm not a good fit for the job. He told me that he didn't think after talking to me that I would be very good with people because I seem to have problems expressing myself. Ok. He said I need some brushing up on my social skills. Alright.

I was waiting for him to get done kicking me around the little cubicle when he stands up and says he was going to go see if anyone else wanted to talk to me or if I should go. So I sat in the quiet for about 10 minutes. Just sitting. Wondering when the heck I became such a non-people person when some other man walked in. He sat down, smiled, read my papers and then just looked at me sizing me up. I looked back. I wasn't going to flinch. He smiled.

He asked me to tell him a little about me and why I wanted to work for 'home improvement' store. The first thing that came to mind was "It's spitting distance from my house." Inside I figured I should just grab my purse and thank him for his time but he kind of laughed. Then he started asking the same old interview questions that always get asked. I don't know who thought up those questions but they really bug me.

Why would you be an asset?
Tell me about a time that you____________.
What would you do if___________.

Then he pulls something out from the folder he was carrying and slides it in front of me.

"I want you for receiving clerk. It's not the easiest job, requires a bulldog to handle vendors and drivers. You have the keys to the store and no one gets in without going through you. You'll spend alot of time on the phone getting store credit and you don't hang up till you've got it. Sound like something you want to do?"

Someone's voice came out of nowhere and said "Sure, I can do that," and I sat in shock while he outlined the hours, pay, benefits, programs, blah blah blah. It's full time Monday thru Friday with some Saturdays while they are stocking the place for the opening next month. Next thing I know someone is handing me the swab for a drug test and just like that I was outta there.

So for the last two weeks I've been waiting for a background check to come in hoping beyond hope that they don't research your relatives.

And today I got a call that everything came back just fine and I start orientation in two days.

Can I get a big PRAISE GOD here?
