Do You Believe...

...that your life is shaped by:
Destiny
Free will
I can't even figure out how to program my DVD player and you're asking me THIS???

I'm dyslexic. I scream Ho instead of Oh God in the throes of passion.

Hard to vote. There are destiny factors such as the family, the nationality, the race, and the looking that one is doomed to bear upon his/her birth. Free will definitely plays an important role as well when one is old enough to make his/her own decisions about life independently.

But alas, I do have a problem with programming my DVD player, so I might as well vote for the last one.

It's shaped by free will, unfortunately it's not MY will that's doing the shaping right now.

Still, I sorta made my bed and am lying in it... But beds are made for laying, I always say.

Cheers!

My life is shaped by one of those old plastic jelly molds.

Currently it's in the shape of a rabbit.

Same here--I always did wonder about this. If we have free will, when does it start? We never have the capacity to choose when, where and how we would be born in the first place, so when do we get free will handed to us?

Filipinos are great believers in Fatalism, beta. The term "bahala na"[/i} or, loosely translated, meaning, "whatever happens" is deeply ingrained in our psyche, and most of us also believe everything that happens to us is the will of God.

I don't buy it though. But then it makes me think--which parts of our lives do we really have free will over? Our births and deaths and predestined, and sometimes, no matter what you do, you lose control over how your life goes, as if (as you were saying in your blog) Life is playing you a big cosmic joke.

I mean, I do have free will, but I still can't program the dang VCR.

It's a battlefield of free wills in this household these days, too.

The western judicial system is based on free will--though lawyers will sometimes argue exactly what Agnes has brought out: family, nationality etc. particularly when dealing with juveniles.

When I deal with assessment, I deal with what is in front of me--knowing full well it is a snapshot--a moment in time and does not represent the whole picture--just a fragment of the picture. Often, teachers will say to me: but s/he has a horrible life, etc.

I know that poverty and neglect has a huge impact on student performance and on the choices available to students--but I also know they do have choices and decisions.
I've often wondered why two people who have had practically the same upbringing--say, both mired in poverty, with violence in the household--can grow up differently. Is it merely as simple as a matter of choice, or do they also have to do battle with the personalities they're born with? Some people seem wired to be defeatists, while some are such optimists you can't help but cheer them on.

Do we get to choose our personalities or are we born with them? I look at my siblings and I, all of us born into the same familial background, and we are each of us SO different from the other.

Sometimes I really wonder what this all means, Flo. What's really out there? For a Christian and a believer in God, I'm trying to reconcile the notion that God granted us free will yet at the same time He knows everything we do. When something happens, we go, "It was God's will," and that makes me think, who's really doing the decision-making round these parts?

I wonder if it's because I'm a Christian that I ask all these?

I'm struggling with the notion of pre-destination myself, because in a sense, that makes us nothing more than automatons going through the motions of life.

But I wonder though, when does Destiny come into play in our lives, and how much of our free will is tied up in it? For example, we can not choose when to have children, or what gender child we will have, even though we can try and tweak the process. When I think of us having "free will", most of the time I see it as us choosing how to react to what Life throws our way--but as to what we're dealt with, I think a lot of it is still left to chance, or Fate, if you will.

Hiya Pilgrim Dan--I also believe in free will, in how it shapes our destiny.

Then something like the quake in China happens and I think, how much control do we really have over our lives? Free will seems to take you only so far, then Fate steps in to demonstrate just how fickle it can be, no matter what we do.

I think to myself about how I never had a say in being given a son with special needs, nor did my son have any choice in the matter. Sometimes I see how difficult it can be for him to overcome this, even though you could see how much he wants to--if wanting was as good as being he'd have had this disability under control years ago, but still he struggles.

And then I meet a man whose firstborn has Down's, and whose youngest has Autism, and I wonder again why these things happen. Only thing we can do, we both said, while talking about our children--is to take it one day at a time. That's just as far as our control over our lives go.

It's not our fault. It's destiny what done it.

And I say that of my own free will.

(Nobody watches Spanish tv, not even the Spanish).
