The Triple Filter Test

In ancient Greece, Socrates was reputed to hold knowledge in high esteem.

One day one fellow met the great philosopher and said, "Do you know what I just heard about your friend?"

"Hold on a minute," Socrates replied. "Before telling me anything I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Triple Filter Test."

"Triple filter?"

"That's right," Socrates continued.

"Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be a good idea to take a moment and filter what you're going to say. That's why I call it the triple filter test.

The first filter is Truth.
Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?"

"No," the man said, "actually I just heard about it and..."

"All right," said Socrates. "So you don't know if it's true or not.

Now let's try the second filter, the filter of Goodness.
Is what you are about to tell me about my friend something good?"

"No, on the contrary..."

"So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him, but you're not certain it's true.
You may still pass the test though, because there's one filter left: the filter of Usefulness.

Is what you want to tell me about my friend going to be useful to me?"

"No, not really."

"Well," concluded Socrates, "if what you want to tell me is neither true nor good nor even useful, why tell it to me at all?"

This is why Socrates was a great philosopher and held in such high esteem.

Friends, Please use this triple filter each time you hear loose talk about any of your near and dear friends.

Woohoo! Go Socrates!! If you are into any Greek themes, then read some Greek mythology. There is a really good concept behind them all... But some are a bit stupid too. LOL!! But nevertheless, interesting to read. Socrates was flawed though, some hated his logic. And understandably! But for his time, i'd say he had a sharp mind.
Did you know that Greeks invented the toilet? Though, I wouldn't use that as bragging rights. HAHA!
Take care.

Oh dear Oh dear....
It is well known.. The Socrates theory, amongst Bunny's.
1st filter.... If a Girlie makes you coffee first thing in
the morning.... It is not a filtered coffee.
2nd.. filter... Girlie's are rarely full of Goodness.
3rd .. filter. Socrates was "a great philosopher and held in such high esteem". But he never tasted a decent cup of coffee.

My mother used to teach Kindergarten. Many times during the day one six-year-old or another would come running up to her shouting "Teacher! Teacher!" She would stop them cold with a glance and say:

"Is anyone hurt?" No, was the usual answer.
"Is anyone in danger of being hurt?" Well, no....
"Then walk back outside that door and come in again at a walk. Say 'excuse me, Mrs. Kitty.' Then we will talk."

Not quite in the same league as Socrates, but she sure did have a well-behaved classroom....

Nice to see that thinking before talking is still regarded as good manners.

Winks,

LK

Sorry you got disappointed. I know how much you like a good kopi-o.

But I thought I serve something different this time. Something that might be more useful for some.

Hi Justmeddy

You do have a point there, as most of the News is 'hearsay'. I've stopped reading them and have only collective hearing for BBC News. Still, we need to keep up with what is happening around us.

Hi LBY

I have always been intrigued by philosophers. Perhaps it's because I am very philosophical, as that is the only way we can survive the rat race.

I didn't know that it was the Greeks who invented the toilet. I always thought it was the French who invented it. But since you mentioned it, I got curious and found that it was the Chinese who invented the toilet during the Han Dynasty (as they invented so many other useful things).

Just thought I mention it dear

Hi SL

Nice to see you again

I personally never listen to 'hearsay', no matter how much my friends enjoy it. I only remind them occasionally that it could be them others talk about in a negative way.

You have a lovely week ahead SL

Hi LK

Those were the golden, older days. Some take pride in teaching others right from wrong, like your dear mother. Unfortunately not many remember what they were taught when they were young, even though they are supposed to be teachers. I sometimes hear from my daughter "but my teacher said ....". To which one can only smile and remind that this is our house, and in our house we have 'our' rules.

Thank you for sharing your delightful story dear
