Is culling elephants right?

In SA we cull elephants when their herds get too big in the parks. Problem being that they cause massive devastation to the environment and affect other animals living there. Massive herds destroy large areas that take very long to grow back. Some people say it is bad to do that. But there really would be nothing left of the parks if they didn't. Elephants are too big and strong to transport to other coutries too...so that is out of the question. The tusks are sold to keep the parks running as well (That is another problem on it's own too)
So what do you think? Is the killing of elephants just living their own natural lives a good or bad thing ultimately?
From what I have seen...my answer is difficult but - yes.
Yes
No
Don't know enough to say.
There are other ways to deal with elephants.
Let's cull the cullers
Let's cull Blink!

Oh, I decided to unban everybody. That post was getting boring and too time consuming. LOL!
Also all the banned bloggers' previous comments went away. But I see they come back after a while.

blink-

yeh, u hafta cull them in park situations, because it is by definition a "managed" area... as one of the most numerous species on the planet, humans have turned virtually all places into managed areas... u do have to wonder what would happen if we were ever wiped out by the bird flu or something...

can u ship some ivory over here?? it would be fabulous material from which to construct an ... i will leave the actual elephant udders for u and raoul

-feeling genErous

I'm not sure that "culling" is the right word, maybe "conservation" is more appropriate. Bear in mind that those chosen to be killed tend to be the older of the species/those that are sick/injured etc and that letting herds of elephants increase in size is harmful not just for the environment, but other species too - including elephants, it isn't nice that it has to happen but done properly and by trained marksmen there is no real argument against it.

I have read everybody's comments. But I am too lazy to reply to all now. So i'll condense it into this one comment.
Everybody has a valid point! Except eimee - you are unbanned! And elaine - but we all know that. LOL! ---- Which humans do you think we should start off with. I see I haven't been marked in the poll so I am safe it seems.
.
Kirstie - your comment is the most important you know. We need to kill lots of Kangaroos when I visit then. We can get rich...50c per kilo is a good bounty I say! xxx I'll harvest some udders too!
